Prices are nuts

Games are costing $50 to $200 million to develop plus a similar amount on marketing?

They're now at the point where risking the warranty on the console will start looking very attractive to a lot of people.

My experience in this country is that they typically don't drop rapidly and often not by much.

Yes, Shenmue however many years agocost $70million to make. GTA4 and MGS4 are rumoured to have cost around $100 million each. KZ2 is sitting at ~$40million.

But don't get me wrong, I do agree on teh other points.

Geez. i saw an arcade bundle for R1699 (at hifi corp i think). how easy wouldnt it be to chip it, never connect to live, and play "grey" *cough-pirated-cough* games from a flea market. On the other hand, i def think i enjoyed GTA4 more than the R730 i paid for it.

Game developers can sell advertising space in the games and make more money that way than selling them. But aren't they doing that already?

Having to wait for second hand games or until the game becomes a bargain doesn't really work for me. When a game is released it's new and there are lots of hype over the game and you want to play it, after a few months the game loses its appeal and there is something new and better so why would you want to play something old.

Also when a game is released more people play it on Live or on PSN and after a few months the numbers fall and by the time you get the game it's hard to find a decent network game.

Then the answer is to buy early and sell your games soon - they hold a lot more value in the 2nd hand market that way. I effectively paid R220 to play GTA4, because I sold it after a month.

Yeah they are doing it already ..... funny how the games still cost the same

Ok now this is where I'm going to have to be TOTALLY different from all you guys.

Firstly I never ever never buy a pre-played game ever. I just can't! I want the game to be brand spanking new still sealed in the original factory seal :) This is what gives me pleasure. The excitement of opening it and seeing it in it's all new glory (I just like my new stuff)

I don't buy from retail stores either since I feel that most of their games (even though it's new) still feels secondhand since the seals are almost always broken (CNA, Game, L&L, Musica, Toys, Incredible, BT, etc.)...so I just buy online (it's cheaper anyway).

Now you must think I'm some rich kid but actually I'm far from it. I just never buy the latest titles. I'm probably what you call a back gamer since I usually hunt for the older cheaper A grade bargain titles :) Except if it's a new game that I just can't resist.

Just look here for example: Xbox 360 (Online Shops)

The Darkness - R178
Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars - R182
Bullet Witch - R209
Assassins Creed - R270
Test Drive Unlimited - R209
Gears of War - R270
Viva Pinata - R220
Burnout Paradise - R270
PGR3 - R199
Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle Earth II - R220
Eternal Sonata - R200
Dark Sector - R250
Rainbow Six Vegas - R200
Half-Life 2: The Orange Box - R250
Dead Rising - R180
Perfect Dark Zero - R260
F.E.A.R. Files - R180
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - R180

and many more....all these under R300...heck some are even under R200 so no worries here ;)

Which sites do you guys normally buy from? I bought from Kalahari and Digital Planet before, but I'm scared to just buy from any dodgy website. Which sites can be trusted and have the best prices?

The problem is, with DLC being the next big thing, they are already trying to kill the 2nd hand market. Gears 2 is already doing this by including a code (SA didn't get this code - and they wonder why piracy is so big here) that you can only use once to download special maps.

The crooks in management of gaming companies are trying very very very hard to destroy the 2nd hand gaming market. And with everything starting to go online, they are succeeding.

Bastards.

Get your xbox chipped and pirate the games, don't feel bad about ripping of game makers as 700 rand a game is ripping us off.

Only a few publishers are open about it but that is the whole point of DRM. Piracy is not the issue, secondhand game sales are.

One of them even went as far as to say the buying a secondhand game is equivalent to stealing.

The gaming industry will be driven into the ground by scumbag publishers like EA, etc.

I also read that article. Sucks. WTF are we, the consumer, who can't afford R700 a pop supposed to do if buying second hand is the same as piracy?

I just hope and pray that they don't ditch physical media and go completely over to DL games....that's when I'll quit gaming

I normally buy all the games which I feel are worth playing. At the moment it is impossible, so many good games out @ R700!

R700 is just too much. The local game industry is going to die at these prices.

I'm also in no rush to get the game the day its released. I'll rather wait until the game goes platinum or get it second hand.

Some better prices from Take2:

Dead Space (PS3) 543
FIFA 09 (PS3) 543
FIFA 09 (Xbox 360) 543
Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360) 543
Mirror's Edge (PS3) 543
Mirror's Edge (Xbox 360) 543
Need for Speed: Undercover (PS3) 543
Need for Speed: Undercover (Xbox 360) 543

Even bundling NFS: undercover Free with a console, wouldn't be a "good deal" ... ;)

I'm keen on ME, but that price is just to steep, I've already committed over R2k on games in the last 2 months, there's just no more to give! :sob:

What pushes me closer and closer to just pirating ever other game is having the choice between 4 or 5 new games, going with one and then not having it be your thing despite good reviews, etc.

Somebody buy Left 4 Dead from me so I can justify spending some bucks on Mirror's Edge or Fable 2 :(

Just not my thing, soz. I'm in a bigger pickle, I want to get ME, Fallout 3 and Endwar, but I don't have anything I'm prepared to sell (unless someone wants my GH2...)
