I've rolled a priest and need some advice. I'm currently shadow for leveling and plan to dual spec at 40 to holy for healing. Is shadow my best option for leveling? Should I consider discipline instead of holy when I reach 40? What are my most important stats - spell power, intellect?

Shadow is the best spec for levelling I am told (I did it as holy, with 3 pts in spirit tap) spirit for mana regen and spell power for more pew pew whilst levelling i would say.

Personally at end game I prefer disc to holy

shadow so u can actually do dmg, just remember priest cant really solo group quest or elites so hard time leveling :(

Shadow if you are questing and killing NPCs ect.

Discipline/Holy if you going to do constant instances. Personally I prefer Discipline, at least that is what I played when I had a priest way way back.

They really buffed a priests holy damage towards the end of BC, so solo holy and disci levelling isn't the impossibility / exercise in masochism it once was, but shadow is the way to go for dps / solo play. And if you keep a set of mp5 gear in your bags, you'll also heal quite adequately for 5 man instances right up until lvl 80 HC's, though holy or discipline would be the preferred and easier way to do it.

So far as choosing between holy & discipline goes, I can't really help you there as I've only ever played holy on mine. From what I gather disci seems to be more focussed on group damage prevention using multiple and stronger shields than holy, while holy focusses on bigger and faster heals and is more suited to single target healing.
I know I've enjoyed holy on mine, so I'm quite happy to recommend that to you, but it might be an idea once you get to 80 to dual specc disci & holy rather than shadow / ????, and swap between the two while healing instances at HC / end-game level to see which you prefer.

Shadow is definately the way to go when levelling, you have a lot less downtime than holy.
When it comes to holy / disc at end game, it depends on what you want to do in raids. Disc is more of a group heal build, while holy is a single target build, generally aimed at healing tanks thanks to quick heals and some big heals, especially if you crit often. My priest at 80 was specced Holy/disc and Shadow, and I switched between the 2 depending on whether the raid needed a tank healer or extra dps

/facepalm.
Discipline is focused on single/dual target tank healing.
holy is focused on AOE/raid healing.

Holy is competent at tank healing, as a disc priest (played well) it is perfectly competant at raid healing. mileage may vary.

Shadow is the best way to go for leveling, but Disc is the prefered healing spec to level with, once you can get to penance. I would suggest to spec to disc at 70 for the Wrath normals and into heroics and questing. (shorter q times, also pvp is more viable as Disc at lower gearing)

The stats you want to stack while leveling are
Spell power, Crit, MP5 (for healing) the rest I wouldnt worry about, they will come.

The heirloom items are a really good idea if you have a main with spare emblems. Or crusader title.

enjoy your priest.

ohh and my played on my priest is 84 days 13 hours ....

while leveling its all about downtime and mana usage.
if you are leveling and healing instances make sure you go disc, holy is utter garbage and will have you drinking after every single mob.

stay shadow for soloing, it really picks up after you get VT and you have 0 downtime if you manage shadowfiend well

I has a priest ^^

From 40 on u quest as shadow. Its easy and just gets easier as u go along.
Dual spec Disc for dungeon healing & some BG healing (its easier on mana and quite cool)

Disc @ 80 atm is used for Raid shielding (not tank healing really) but u can heal tanks decently also.

GL & HF :)

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm currently level 21 and leveling as shadow and enjoying it. I've used the lfd system as healer, not finding it too hard, since not much healing needed at this stage. Would shadow spec be efficient to heal till I've reached level 40 for dual spec?

You can heal as shadow right the way up to 80 if you want to actually - the instances are designed to be do-able for offspec healing & tanking - just ask my feral druid about the days before dual specc, and my enhance shammy managed just fine healing in instances up till lvl 40 now ;)
It *is* a bit harder than doing it with the "proper" specc though, so take dual specc at 40 by all means. It'll save you a few wipes & a lot of crazy moments hoping the tank doesn't die before that big heal finishes casting.
