Hi,
I have a Canon Pixma IP4300 which I am really happy with (especially the DVD print option and the duplex). Now my printing needs have gone up and buying cartidges is getting a bit expensive.

There are three options for me (conceptually):
1. Buy a new printer (color laser printer) - preferably with network connection (that works with Linux):
a) which one?
b) where to get toners?
c) can it print on DVDs?
2. Buy alternative printer cartidges (Pelican or something) or refill
a) where?
b) any downsides to this? (the printer is about 3 years old, so I don't really care about the warranty)
3. Find a cheaper supplier for the original cartidges
a) maybe some combo back offer or something?
b) any recommendations?

I would appreciate your thoughts on this. Thank you

juro

The generic do not work on some of the IP4xxx/IP5xxx canons as the cartridges use a chip to "monitor" the ink levels. Once the ink levels have depleted, the chips have a status flag that is updated to reflect this. This prevents you from refilling a cartridge or taking a generic cartridge without the chip and using the chip from the old cartridge on it (this is how the R30 cartridges work).

The old cannons did not have this problem and even the originals use to cost R45.

I got the IP5200 and looking at binning it if it was not such a ballache to get to it. I'm going Samsung from now on as they have awesome Linux support. Even the most basic laser printer I bought for my wife worked out of the box under Ubuntu and the software that comes with it works really nice - control panel where you can set even more settings than available under CUPS

To answer your questions:
1) (a) Any HP (b) Incredible Connection, Makro, specialist computer retailers, etc. (c) Probably not

Does the Pixma IP4300 use single-ink or a dual-cartridge system? Might want to look at one where every colour has its own cartridge. Unfortunately Canon is the one company that's not coming to the party regarding Linux compatibility, and if it wasn't for that I would have recommended them. I have however seen extensive support for HP's printers.

There is a cartridge place in Pinelands (Howard Centre) that sells generic cartridges for about R70 - works perfectly on my Canon MP540.

Hi everyone and thank you for the feedback!

I also have good experiences using HP laser printers - the price is just quite high ;) Especially seeing that HP doesn't deliver the unit with full cartridges (apparently).

@AfricanTech, that would be a good idea - I still have an issue open with the owner ....
@lexor, have you printed on DVDs using those yet?

Issue? Sounds juicy! Anything the rest of us should watch out for?

Google for a CISS system for your printer. I've seen that even qphoto and a lot of photographers use that option. (Its basically an external ink tank)

anyone know a place in Pietermaritzburg which sells generic cartridges for cheap and work with my printer? atm it costs like between R100 - R200 per cartridge so it comes to like R200 - R400 for black and colour.

ive got a Cannon IP1900
