Renaming prisons should help transform them into centres of hope, the correctional services department said on Thursday.

"Minister Sibusiso Ndebele says that the renaming of correctional centres must assist in transforming places of incarceration to centres of hope and second chances," spokesman Logan Maistry said in a statement.

President Jacob Zuma officially renamed the Pretoria Central Prison Kgosi Mampuru II Management Area on Wednesday.

Kgosi Mampuru was hanged on November 22, 1883, at the Pretoria prison for public violence.

The National Development Plan (NDP) encouraged the actions of departments to be human rights centred, Maistry said.

"For example, the name of Qalakabusha Correctional Centre in KwaZulu-Natal means a place to start over, or new beginnings, and is largely seen by the community where it is located as such," Maistry said.

Last month, Ndebele performed a symbolic release from Robben Island of 12 prisoners whose remains had not been found for more than 40 years.

In January, the department arranged a meeting between the 1996 Worcester bombing victims and the youngest bomber, at the Pretoria Central Prison.

The Worcester bombing occurred on Christmas Eve in 1996. Four people, three of them children, died and 67 people were injured.

Slaughter houses, would be a good name. Bring back the death penalty as well so the name at least lives up to it's reputation :D.

Please stand facing wall, bang bang bang, chuck body on fire. Next

Pretoria Central Prison = Kgosi Mampuru II Management Area

So the criminals are not in a prison but a management area ?

Gary, your avatar is so apt for this story.
So let me get this straight. When Mandela was the Induna we had a police "service". Now we have a police "force" and there are... let's just call them problems. We used to have "prisons" but now we have "management areas"... This will not end well.
What do we call it when murderers and rapists escape now... A sabbatical? A gap-year? A pass (oops, can't use that one). Unencumbered therapy?
I'd go as far as suggesting prison names like "Hard Labour", "Extreme Discomfort", "The End of All Hope" instead.

It's like sticking a Ferrari badge on a GMW and thinking its going to fool anybody.

Lovely... Criminals get more rights and treated better than the victims they terrorized. Arse backwards government... wtf?

Do they have a committee that gets employed to push forward a rename scheme every six months? I'd rather they improve rehabilitation and the service within prisons than just putting on new paint.

what is the serial rapist/killers name? surely he is the one of the worst in the world. Why did he not get a prison?
