The Prius seems really unpopular amongst a lot of petrolheads for whatever reason. Prolly because of its ugly shape and the fact that it's not a performance car.

Still, it's an excellent machine in a lot of ways. Maybe this article from Autoblog might at least illuminate this fact a little bit for all of you haters out there. I'll quote from the closing paragraph of the article:

Every night, I tell my daughter to try something new at dinnertime. The common reply is almost always, "No, Daddy. I don't like it." This generates an automatic "But you never even tried it before!" from me. When it came to the Prius, I was as stubbornly opposed to the idea of it being worthwhile as my daughter is to new foods. So I walked the walk that goes with the talk I constantly give her. I tried the Prius, and I'll be damned. I really liked it. So says a hater, through a mouthful of crow.

Sign me up for a Prius as soon as a plug-in version comes out. Toyota says 2010 but I hear that they are not happy with the state of the art in Li Ion batteries and might go for a larger capacity NiMH.

I just don't like Toyotas in general. To me the Prius is just another Toyota. It's plasticcy amd damn ugly and it has a serious lack of power. Apart from that, I'm sure it's a wonderful car. For the money you spend though? Nuh uh...

Those two cars are not supposed to compete with each other in any way.

I can just as easily say that I want a Bugatti Veyron because it's a cool car and that an M3 sucks. But that would be equally stupid.

Didn't know it had to be fair. Is selling price the only definition of fair? Or cost of manufacturer maybe?

R300,000 - Audi S3 maybe? Or the A3 Cabrio.... Golf 5 GTI... Civic Type-R with change. . . Almost a new S2000....

Just remember to sign the ________________(space) where it says:

I ___________________(name and surname) hereby agree to be a prick whenever possible on any form of road/byway/highway etcetc.

Those slips come standard with every BMW sold :p
The prius is going for R292k, and the new shape Audi A4 is going for around 300k.

I would rather have the Audi A4 thx :D

I'm not "calling out" anyone. I'm simply pointing out that a lot of people seem to have a blind/irrational hatred of the Prius (you stand out in particular, xrapidx, with your statement that it's not even a car), without actually judging the car on its merits.

The article I linked comes from a guy who felt the same way as you about the Prius, and who cared **** all about the environment, but who came away really liking the car after having spent some time with it.

Yes, the Prius is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's still a great piece of engineering and to simply label it as a crap car (or not a car at all) because you don't like it is immature and ignorant.

The cars you listed (Audi S3 maybe? Or the A3 Cabrio.... Golf 5 GTI... Civic Type-R with change. . . Almost a new S2000.... ) are also very good cars, but it's arguable that given the highly congested road conditions in our cities, the Prius makes more sense and would actually be a more enjoyable vehicle to use during a lot of one's motoring.

Seriously though, if you can't even bother to read the article, then refrain from commenting.
 
Price is usually a big deciding factor when choosing a car. What does the Prius offer over any other car in the same price range? To me the electrical power is practically a gimmick because you really have to drive Miss Daisy to reap any benefit from it. And if you can afford R290k, then fuel consumption should be the least of your worries anyway. So while the author may have changed his perception, I doubt that it would apply to everyone. Different strokes and all that :)

What exactly is your experience with a Prius, have you even been in one? You call me immature and ignorant, but don't even know if I have a history with the car, how mature is that?

Okay, in that case I've got to stick to my comparison as well. The M3 is a piece of crap. It makes, what, 500 horses? That's nothing! The Veyron makes 1100. And the M3 cannot even reach 300km/h, let alone 400. What a POS!

I've driven a Prius, if that's what you're asking.

*edit* I also never called you immature or ignorant. I said it's immature and ignorant to label something as crap just because you don't like it.
