now with all the talk about vista been satan or the anti-christ, lets talk about the good things about it! in honest truth i think vista is a good thing, but not atm, it still will need a little time for techology to catch up(the buget systems at least) and once a service pach comes out next year or so, i will really rock. but vista is better suited for gaming, maybe not with the demanding resource usage atm, but say 6 months when hardwear prices come down, it will be better for gaming. sure with current games there is a slight performance downage but as soon as cyrsis and other dx10 games out, the api will make much better usage of the os and the system canfig,

so please said your thoughts and not hate mail

Yes Vista has been called many things, even as far as to say its users are something awful. However the truth is that its a way forward from XP.
XP has had 6years to be what it is today, unlike Vista.
Yes there are performance hits with games and the like, but unfortunately this is inevitable. It was bound to happen from the first time DirectX relied on capability-bits for hardware feature support. This unfortunate incident happened even before the first commercially available version of DirectX came about. The relationship the hardware had with the Os was bound to come to am unsavory end, and with all things considered the slight performance hit is better than what would have otherwise happened had all legacy hardware support been dropped.

I'm not a fan of Microsoft, there are many things on a daily basis that they do which hold technology back , but more importantly are unethical. Just the entire idea of buying an operating system in 2007 is ridiculous, however such is Microsoft.

When however they do good, they are very good. Vista to some degree is very good, it is by and large far better than anything else they've produced before and that's a step in the right direction as far as windows goes.

What always confuses the issue are extremist views on Microsoft its operating systems and the competition from either side.
Whatever Vista may be to anybody, it's the best at that. For the average user, there just simply isn't a better Operating system.

;) I like it...

It sure looks pretty but that is no compelling reason for me at least to upgrade to it considering it will use more resources ... so where are the must have "killer" applications ???

Office 2007 runs on XP as well ;).

IMO, the only reason to move to Vista is to see a prettier interface, but not necessarily more usable, and of course DirectX10. Which is the only reason people will move to Vista. Vista have no compelling new features that makes it a "wow" OS. Microsoft caught on to the fact that gamers drives the market in a big way, and they plan to capitalize on that fact.

Microsoft - Bend over and take it like a man.

Thread says Pro Vista not your personal bias against Microsoft

i hate microsoft with their varing price on stuff that just should cost that much

microsoft would sell more of their products like office if it a reasonable price

can u like to say raped

i dont think their OS costs are to bad because there is alot of work that goes into, but office has not change much since 97 apart from visual and a few extra's so not alot of work goes into but yet they charge more than the operating system

i will windows but i wont buy microsoft office thats for sure

Pro Vista people. Pro Vista stuff not personal vendetta.
Hate is a strong word, hate also means all objectivity goes out the window.
Are you all saying there is nothing positive about Vista?
If that is the case then it goes further in proving that your arguments, and POV are motivated by personal rage or whatever else you have against Microsoft.

Nobody spends $6BN to go backwards in technology

Well personally I can't wait to get my vista copy. Should be arriving tomorrow. Now if nvidia and asus could just hurry with the drivers.

Vista from what I have seen and read is great for dx10 system. The interface also looks great. Plus I like being at the cutting edge of new technology.

Well the pro for Vista over XP is that when you buy Vista you get a new disc with no scratches to replace your old XP disc :D :p ;)

umm i never said i hate windows OS or programs i said i hate microsoft for high pricing

i love windows and office just wish office was cheaper so that most ppl could afford to buy it

given 2400 for office pro is not alot considering the usage but not everyone has 2400 rand to pay for it

The definate high point of Vista is it's increased security. I must say that I aprreciate the security promts. It's basically what Linux does. Now you get people who complain about these promts.. and I'm like..... o_0.

The other up is the eye candy... I can't tell you how tired I am of MS's Fischer Price look. Now atleast I don't have to hack the OS to make it look sexy.

I never thought that I would use the new search feature of Vista, but due to some rather hectic reorganising of my hard drives it came in EXTREMELY handy. I just started typing the first few letters, and WHAM! the files that I was looking for were there, and there weren't any annoying dogs sniffing my drive, it was instant.

There are other things as well, but I am getting depressed talking about it, seeing as I still use XP at work... which is something that will be changing very soon.

People also have to note that you pay such a big sum of money for the software because of the End User Support attached to it. You don't just pay for the OS, but you pay for the support you get when you phone MS. If you don't want support, just ask a contact to organise you an OEM or DSP which comes in at under R1500, and of course, don't expect support for it :)

Remember, Linux is free... You can also purchase Linux for your Business, although in so doing, you are paying for support.

Well this thread went well. No surprise :(

People also seem to forget that although Vista may function almost exactly like XP in many ways, it was almost completely re-written simply because it is based on a different version, server 2003 right? They have written out a lot of bugs and problems to keep it as crash free as possible. Also, many Windows applications (Prefetch is a good example) have been improved. Start up times work much better with the new Vista prefetch from what I can tell.

Vista isn't revolutionary, but its better. You can't just say its only got Aero, no matter how much you hate MS they couldn't sit around for 6 years and then make a new skin and call it Vista.

Then theres the security, speed, DX10, and new built in firewall, which still has its problem but is actually almost a firewall now :D

ek dude apart from the speed dx 10 and aero factor, what is so different about vista?

my computer is now computer. everything feels the same just placed else where or renamed

why couldnt you make a new skin speed it up and sell it to the masses knowning they will buy it?

microsoft office is the biggest scam, what is new? nothing
everything is renamed and relocated and makes your life alot harder now :)

but still i bought vista because i love new things to play with

I like the look of Vista, I want it, but I'll wait till the price taps of a bit and I upgrade my desktop. I'm far more interested in Home Server, it serves a more pressing need in my life.

The single most significant thing about Vista for me is that they got rid of the single most unintuitive piece of software ever.

The "start" button.

I guess what most people miss is the fact that Aero, Dx10 and such are just a minor part of Vista. What cost 6 billion dollars was the complete rewrite of the Windows API, which is something consumers will never see, ".net 3.0" / WinFX was released for XP as well so it's not consider pure "Vista" but the changes introduced for developing for the platform are massive.

As far as Office goes, I understand why people feel hard done by and it's not uncalled for. 80% of users use 10% or less of what Office can do. MS should release an Office "grandma" edition, although I guess MS Works is supposed to fill that role. Works is actually a really nifty piece of software for the home and more people should look at it. Once again, there's so much under the hood of Office, when you compare it to other enterprise class apps, what you can do with office and a bit of elbow grease, it's a positive steal.

yea office is the biggest rape eva :(

the price of vista will not come down, xp never came down and when it did was exchange related

Vista is actually quite cheap outside of RSA. Getting it with my laptop, ultimate edition and only R800ish...

Office professional would be R2000 but i don't need that...

Err, wasn't XP Professional around R2.5k when it first came out? I vaguely remember seeing a quote for the retail version for that much.
