ProASM Help!!! - 3 Weeks and still cannot connect

nope. game still won't connect... and surfing's a tad sluggish tonite.

managed to get surfing up and running, but only after i installed Kerio Wingate again.

ICS is a joke! [:p]

i am now certain that it's a routing problem (thanks to some SERIOUS help from greedyflyza - thanks for that mate, you're the MAN! [:D])

soooo... now all I have to do is get the routing sorted... ugh.

any suggestions anyone? and DON'T tell me about the MTU crap, because it DOESN'T work... and if you're persistent that it does work, show me how - like you would a 3 year old kid... step by step...

i've enabled UPNPHost which, apparently, allows apps to dynamically open ports for a specified time - anyone know anything about this? This is another problem that I think i have to circumvent. SWG uses a whole bunch of odd ports, and I have to get them opened up. Easier said than done. I tried opening them, but I think the routing problem still gets in the way. I can see the packets go out, but they don't come back again.

Also, when I was installing Kerio it moaned about SSDPSRV being enabled, can someone tell me what that is?

Kerio is quite a cool app - very impressed with it - it succeeded where Microsoft ICS failed horribly. Now all I need to do is get the routing sorted out. [:(]

The problem seems to be that when packets arrive at the modem PC, they are not correctly routed to the pc on which the game is being played. Thus, the port forwarding may not be working 100%.

Is there a way to perhaps accomplish this? A packet must reach the modem PC on say port 7000 and then it must realise: hey, this is 7000 - that means it must go to gaming pc port 7000. Cant seem to get this working with SWG..

thought this would help out a bit. this is a log of what happens.

i have set up NAT on both LAN -> Sentech and Sentech -> LAN to translate the IPs to that of the outgoing interface on a whole list of ports specified on the SWG website.

as you may notice, only the outgoing rule is kicked off. the incoming one isn't...

now, i was thinking, which is something that i do [;)], if i do NAT so that it translates the outoing packets to sentech, and the incoming packets to LAN - would that work? the only problem with that is that it sends these packets from, as they say on the SWG site, ports > 1023 - so I'm thinking "Right, so which ports do I put NAT on?"

Now, I'm thinking some more (getting a headache from all this thinking [:p]) What if I do this?

Any connection from sentech, NAT sentech -> LAN
any connection from LAN, NAT LAN -> sentech

think that'll work?

one thing i can say about this whole debacle - I learnt a LOT about networks! [:D]

was hoping that this might help to solve my problem...

wish it were that easy. it has to be imported from the States!

can't buy it in SA.

game costs about R600 (with import costs etc) and the subscription is about R120 a month

it's an AWESOME game! definately the best i've ever played!

not an EA game. SOE - Sony Online Entertainment. they don't have a local branch

they don't officially support playing the game through a firewall, that's the problem.

Still cannot connect.

You wouldn't believe this...I asked Sentech last week to freeze my account as I cannot connect. They agreed. Now I see they went ahead and deducted the money from my account anyway!!!

oh!? thanks for the info flash! wow! didn't know that! :)

excellent, thank you! :)
a very original "steve-rsa".

Funny that, I think you gave me some advice when I changed from my BM 318is to the Astra 200iSE. I was looking at a "your shape" Mondeo as well as the 626.

ChemicalX:

Some protocols can simply not be NAT'ed succesfully. These are mostly protocols that send the IP address of the INSIDE machine, to the server, and the server then attempts to send traffic back to the IP of the INSIDE machine, which, naturally doesn't really exist.

Examples of this is the old Quake protocol, and IRC's DCC. If this game's protocol is that badly written then it may very well be that you will NEVER be able to NAT it due to the way it was written.

Alternatively, contact your GAME VENDOR for a solution, since a Sentech modem is just like ANY other dialup modem and I'm sure there are many other people that try to play their game using ICS.

just a quick response to that, I personally have successfully used NAT for DCC but yes, that is probably the case.

TheRoDent: would a Linux box be a good NAT type solution for a standard LAN and port/protocol sharing ie. Kazaa and some other difficult protocols - or would it be a waste of energy and time?

greedy, just an answer back on the kazaa thing - slow.

nothing above 1kbps...

hmmm...

as I thought...

probably some port shaping / prioritisation or something. Going to have to block port 1214 etc on the firewall and send traffic through port 80 [:D]

you're WAY too smart for your own good! heheh.

might have to send you an RA invite again *snicker*

I'm not a Mywireless user, but I've used Kanat with fair sucess along with Kazaa on DSL.

I am getting my modem soon and judging by all these comments about tower 82 I am starting to have my doubts to whether I should go ahead with my Sentech subscription. I am in Little Falls x 1 and am sure that I will also be connecting to 82. Is 82 the one situated there by all the satellite dishes in Radiokop?[:(]

There are various modules that does connection tracking by examining the protocols. Linux has various specialist modules for DCC, Quake, etc.

In general, I haven't found anything that my Linux machine wouldn't NAT, so it's a good solution, yes.
