Probe into municipality's R5m breakfast
KZN Cogta MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, is probing a R5-million business breakfast.
It was reportedly hosted by the Zululand District Municipality to woo investors.
If there were 100 delegates, that's R50,000 worth of orange juice, corn flakes, bacon and eggs and coffee EACH !
Zululand mayor says MEC lying about business breakfast cost
DURBAN - The Zululand District Municipality is accused of spending R5-million on a business breakfast.
The meeting took place last week at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban.
It appears the council did not approve the budget for the event, which is now being probed by the provincial government.
Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi has hailed the gathering as a success and stated the provincial MEC Sipho Hlomuka is lying about the cost.
He said, "these allegations are totally baseless. They are a figment of the MEC's imagination."
"We had an overwhelmingly successful business breakfast where we only spent an amount of R137,000 to host this investment seminar and we secured R600-million worth of investment in tourism and water infrastructure, which we unveiled on the day."
Buthelezi said the MEC is pursuing a political agenda.
Zululand mayor hails business breakfast
ZULULAND District Municipality said the opening of Babanango Game Reserve next year will boost the district’s economy and create job opportunities.
The municipality hosted a business breakfast at the Elangeni Hotel in Durban yesterday, which was attended by business heavyweights including Amazulu FC owner Sandile Zungu, Ithala Bank chief executive Pearl Bengu, the Public Investment Corporation and Boxer Stores. The keynote address was delivered by Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Zululand mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi hailed the breakfast as a success, adding that R60 million’s investments would be realised as a result of the engagements that took place at the breakfast. He said more than 30 Zululand companies were linked to national and international companies as far away as Germany, whose representatives had flown out just to attend.
He said it was important to bring the breakfast to Durban where there were big businesses and also to put Zululand on the national map. The mayor said the newly built Babanango
Game Reserve was one of the projects the municipality signed a memorandum of understanding with.
Chief executive Jeffrey van Staden said his game reserve would open next year and create full-time employment for 250 people.
He said his company had already spent R5 million assisting poor communities affected by the looting in July and Covid-19, even before starting operations, which was something he was proud of.
The mayor said the political stability in his district ensured that not a single shop had been looted during the unrest and said this showed that his district was a good place in which to do business. The mayor further announced the revamping of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi airport, and said there would be three flights a week from Joburg directly to the airport.
KZN municipality’s egg-spensive R5 million business breakfast under spotlight
The ANC says the event also conveniently 'coincided with the launch of the IFP election manifesto'.
...
The opening of Babanango is expected to boost the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP)-led district economy and create job opportunities.
The project is backed by German philanthropist Helms Weisser and his wife, Barbara, who invested R500 million.
While the reserve and its related economic opportunities are situated in Zululand, the event was held in Durban.

So R137000 to host a seminar at the Elangeni..
Assuming their biggest room takes 200 people, thats around R700 per head to hire a conference venue for the morning, and feed them a breakfast or a lunch...
Still seems a bit pricey really.
The other source says 600 million.![]()
Responding to the allegations, the mayor had said the event would benefit Zululand most as the businesses have already pledged R650m, which would help boost the local economy and create job opportunities.
R137k and R5m are two very different figures, who's fooling who?
We'll soon find out I guess, it could all be politicking and someone spreading fake news. From my view, this is politicking through undermining the Babanango Game Reserve project, perhaps there are some personal interests, or perhaps a conflict of interest, in regard to the project at play here as well. What is clear from the Citizen article is that this event was also part of the IFP's economic, job creation manifesto, campaign.
If there is any truth behind the 5mil bill, then make the bill public. The ANC is drumming this one.
Nope seems normal. So R137000 to host a seminar at the Elangeni..
