Resolution Description : Processor restarted

Cause of Failure : Software problem on the router.

Status : Resolved

Resolved my ass... haven't been able to connect to msn since it was "resolved". Bah

At least I can get online now though...

Down again in Jhb too!

Telkom may not know it but ADSL is also vrot in Jhb (Randburg) since about mid afternoon today - cannot FTP, download or send e-mail but can surf sites - getting totally hacked off with this crap - need to get WORK done!

I still do not understand how a network failure of any sort can result in perfect access on port 80, yet everything else is dead?

Nah I'm experiencing it locally. Current local (ftp) downloads are jumping between 2Kb/s and 11Kb/s. I'm in JHB.

Though int downloads over port 80 I'm getting 45Kb/s (512k)

I am currently online with their customer support. I told them that despite the posting, the problem has not been resolved. I live a block or two away from the Barrack Street exchange and I still cannot connect to any sites overseas except on port 80.

He said it might have to do with the peering link being down. I said that I have the same problem with a site in Swaziland and overseas in the US.

Then he said, "You what, so you playing a game?" and then put me on hold, and now I've been on the phone for 11 minutes, listening to that awfully depressing flute melody...

I'm starting to wonder if he put me on hold for this long so that I would be forced to hang up? Is he sitting there right now, monitoring how long I stay on the call? Do they have competitions between them to see who kept a customer on the longest?

This is the same problem as we had on Friday evening, where browsing is fine, but nothing else is. I think if they knew that they could solve the problem faster.

I'm dying to tell this to the telkom agent, but he won't take me off hold.

OK I am getting seriously peeved now. Some of us have clients that depend on us being available! I now have to drive almost 30km to the main site to go and resolve a problem because I cannot connect to them over the net.

Is there nothing we can do about it but phone and get put on hold?

Incredible... a new ticket logged on SAIX noticeboard just hours after the last one:
Call Reference ID : STT000000004267
Failure Type : Network Failure
Problem Description : IS Peering - Access Circuit Failure
Time Down : 12 Sep 2005, 18:15:00
Impact : All clients will not be able to browse websites on the Internet Solutions Network.
Site : Rosebank
Services Affected : IS Peering
Cause of Failure : N/A
Status : New
Funny the symptoms seem the same as they were on Friday, yet we have a new diagnosis. Something is very badly wrong here, and it sucks!

We're probably being rerouted for port 80, everything else just being dropped.

So now I'm transferred back to the call holding pattern, and assigned to a new agent, who knows nothing about my previous conversation.

The previous guy probably went on a break.

I explain the situation to this guy. He doesn't seem to understand what I am saying.

Him: "So you can connect to the Internet?"

Me: "Yes, but only for browsing, not for anything else. Like stock trading, or online games."

Him: "But the problem was resolved."

He tests my line and says there's no problem.

Me: "There IS a problem, it's the same problem as Friday night from 7:30 till +-1:30."

He then starts asking me if I subscribe to TelkomInternet, and I can see where this is heading...

Him: "Do you know if you're on the Shaped or Unshaped option at your ISP?"

Me: "Everything was working fine until I came home this evening. Everything has worked fine since I got ADSL, except for Friday night, and now tonight. My ISP would not go and change my package, and it wouldn't be happening to other people at the same time."

Him: "But it must be the ISP, we "

Me: "So do you think it's just a strange coincidence that a number of people in various parts of the country, with different ISPs can only browse and nothing else?"

Him: "Are all these people from Cape Town?"

(I go through the cities listed here.)

Him: "The Joburg one may be related to the peering link problem."

Me: "What about the problem in Cape Town?"

Him: "There is no problem in Cape Town. It was resolved."

Me: (very angry now) "I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS! YOU JUST DO NOT LISTEN TO YOUR CUSTOMERS! THERE IS A PROBLEM, I'M A CUSTOMER OF YOURS REPORTING THAT THERE IS A PROBLEM! MY GOD! THIS IS PATHETIC! I GIVE UP!"

(I hang up in disgust)

Luckily it was a toll-free number.

He brings up one interesting question. I'm on Axxess. Other people still with this issue, who is your ISP?

i'm in jhb as well, same crap as the last time - international is screwed up, can't log on to msn messenger or any other instant messenger for that matter. i'm really getting tired of this bullsh!t, it's beyond frustrating

Mmmmm, Telkom does it again. Traffic which is not on port 80 is very slow, even access to DynDns.org updating url that update clients use use is very slow. On friday there was also a problem with international access.

I just got off the phone with my ISP and the helpdesk guy told me that SAIX is having problems most of the major cities ............. is this what we pay hundres of rands for every month even though we need (to earn our daily bread) ?
