Problem Description : WBS-IP-ESR-1 - Link down Impact : Customers

LoveDub......i have both Telkomsa and Web Africa........

Same Problem, Port 80 fine everything else not working, same as Friday.

In JHB, ISP is WebAfrica.

I'm with TelkomInternet, and even port 80 is being spastic on some sites (try msn.com, wolfram.com).

On Friday when we had a similar problem it looked like they ended up getting overseas technicians involved on the other end of the international link... then when it started working again they reported the problem "Cleared while localising", which I guess means they never discovered what had caused it.

Wow. Something smells of incompetence.

I am also with axxess. Perhaps we should all call telkom every 10 minutes consistently until the problem is resolved.

I tried to explain to the guy on the phone that it's the same problem as Friday but he wouldn't listen.

Ok, so it's not just one ISP perhaps tweaking their port shaping or something. It's a bunch of them.

Its 10:13 pm and the problem is NOT resolved - WAKE UP TELKOM

Hello,

I am an ADSL user in Cape Town.

I would like to report that I cannot do anything except browse web pages on the Internet.

I cannot use MSN Messenger to communicate with my friends, I cannot use IRC to chat with them, I cannot play online games. Everything except port 80 (web browsing) appears to have been blocked. I suspect that your port shaping system is faulty.

This is something being experienced by a number of your customers in various areas of the country, from different ISPs. So it is not an ISP which is causing this issue, and it is an issue despite responses from your customer support that "there is no problem".

To see what some of those customers are saying, please go to:

The exact same thing happened last Friday evening from around 7:30PM to +- 01:30AM on Saturday morning.

I know that there was a problem in my area earlier today which may have been resolved. But there IS still a problem and it has not been resolved.

Please investigate why packets that are not on port 80 are being dropped. Use the experience gained on Friday evening's event to fix the problem now. Please.

With earnest hope,
XXX

I am in Cape Town and just got home.
Yup sure as ****, we seem to have the exact same problem as friday night.
Can not get my mail from US server and can not login to my Godaddy account (https).
Browsing seems fine except for https (secure) sites.
My ISP is WebAfrica.

You know- systems fail and sometimes it effects other people. perhaps telkom should have made a fromal announcment but hey sometimes things just go funny.
not trying to stickup for telkom just being realistic.

I think the problem effects a larger area than just cape town, I'm in pietermaritzburg and cannot connect to international sites other than port 80 (which just hppens to run on a different network if you wanted to know how it can remain while the others die)

The UDP ports (Instant messangers) are also effected exept Skype which can run through the HTTP port if you set it up to.

gmail hack on port 80

It appears like I'm connected to gmail by proxying through talk.google.com:80... I assume they set that up for people at work behind firewalls etc, anyways, it seems to be working fine.

I hate telkom so much.

j.

this is not a router problem - I think they are testing the new shaping and hardcaps.

Testing on the the live system, which affects people throughout the country? I wouldn't expect anything less...

I see that we now have access again, and despite my logging a call with the helpdesk that there was a fault, it was not listed on the NoticeBoard. It seems they don't want anyone to know there was a problem, or they think there wasn't one.

To Telkom ADSL HelpDesk:

Hi,

I see that normal access to all services has been restored now. I see that there was nothing about this posted on the NoticeBoard. Is that because there was "no problem" again?

Could you please tell me what the problem was, and how it was resolved? I will probably need this information when it happens the next time, and your phone operators insist that everything is resolved.

Another VERY dissatisfied user,
