I wonder if anyone else has a similar problem with ewusbmdm.sys causing their Windows XP system to crash from time to time at start-up? Typically switching on from cold produces a "blue screen of death" which complains that ewusbmdm.sys has caused the crash.

I've updated my PC BIOS to the latest revision and Windows is XP Pro with all Service Packs & Updates etc.

Rebooting the machine will usually let the PC boot normally and the E220 works fine.

I have tried tinkering with the position ewusbmdm.sys loads on boot-up but with no positive result...

Any idea welcome (except buying a new PC etc!!) :)

I've just looked at the Windows XP driver and the Windows 2000 driver and both files are 100% identical (using fc.exe) which seems odd?

A search on the Huawei Support Site didn't reveal any clues...

I've also checked that I have only one copy of ewusbmdm.sys installed. One thing that I did notice (but its probably a red herring) that the time stamp on the driver stored on the device is slightly later than the one in \windows\system32\drivers on my hard drive. I'll try swapping them over and will post the result.

Its not a huge issue, more annoying than anything else.

Thanks for the help...

Just to update on this.

Tried the E220 on another machine with exactly the same motherboard (Gigabyte 8S661FXMP-RZ) and BIOS but this time Windows XP Home and that also crashes to the blue screen of death on first boot. The second boot all works fine!

Huawei E220 Driver Conflict

I have the same problem, XP crashes when i install the E220. It also causes my Cyberlink Power Cinema to crash. I have downloaded the new drivers from the Huawei site am hoping the this will solve the problem. Will give feedback...

I may have cured my problem?

I've switched the USB port used by the Huawei E220 to one of the USB ports on the motherboard itself instead of one on a add-in PCI card. Odd that the latter works fine with every other USB device I have ever used and thats a lot of USB devices!!

I just wonder how the Huawei driver got past Microsoft testing?

So far about six boots have been OK.

Just to update on this...

Since switching USB Ports, the Huawei ewusbmdm.sys driver no longer causes a conflict and crashes Windows XP.

I've booted around 15 times since and all (seems) OK.

I think you mean multi-function, or composite device.
Try the drivers available here.

I'm having EXACTLY the same problem: Windows XP found new hardware asks for this USB driver even though the hardware is a Huawei E620 PCMCIA card.

I've have downloaded and extracted the zipped driver (ewusbmdm.sys) from the website that was suggested by ginggs, but all to no avail.

Huawei's website search function didn't help at all.

google.com and driverguide.com and windrivers.com didn't help much either. (So far...)

Where to from here?

Update: Vodacare sorted this problem out with a Huawei card driver.

(I was hoping to avoid resorting to that, but it turned out to be a pleasant experience.)

Still don't know why the driver recommended by ginggs didn't work...
