Ok so I have a TP-Link TL-MR3420 Hardware version 2 Firmware 3.16.9 and I am trying to use my wifes MTN usb modem X602D on it.

Problem is that the router and the modem don't seem to be talking to each other.
When I go into the router software and look under status it just keeps saying "Identifying" and doesn't actually connect etc...

The modem works fine on the desktop. I hope this is the correct place to post this and that somebody can help.

Thanks

The TP-Link router needs drivers installed on it in order for it to communicate with other modems. These routers are typically loaded with some generic drivers that support a wide range of devices, as well as more specific drivers for the most common modems out there. New drivers are released with firmware upgrades. So try updating the firmware on your router.

But in all likelihood, it is never going to work. You need to use a more common modem, perhaps something from Huawei or ZTE. You can probably buy one for cheap on Gumtree. The MTN modem you have sounds like it is something developed by MTN themselves, as opposed to a re-branded modem from another manufacturer, which means that it probably didn't fall onto TP-Link's radar of common modems to cater for.

Your modem works on your desktop (I assume its a Windows PC) just fine because the correct drivers were installed for it when you first plugged it in. Usually the drivers are stored on the USB modem itself, or Windows might have them already, or it will be downloaded automatically.

You could install custom firmware on the TP-Link, and try that. They usually offer better support for some of the USB dongles.

Check under the mobile broadband sub-section, there are some links there to it.
