K so im not good with this technical stuff, and who better to ask than mybb members.

Lately my router has been dcing alot (adsl light stays red). And the only way to fix it is to make a phone call from my landline (?!?!@!?!@). This is becoming really irritating, as it means I can drop from the games I play at any time.

I did mention this to a telkom technician who came a month ago, he basically dismissed it as a coincedence.

Thanks for your time

Like I dunno how good your technicians are. Theres this thing I notice about all the ones that come here.

When you are trying to give them the symptoms. They listen to you, but you can tell that they are going to dismiss everything you say anyway, and go do their own thing.

Almost like House saying all patients are liars kind of thing..................

Hmm have you got those adsl filters on every device ,Telephones, cordlesses , fax machines and what every connects to the phone line, A device might be affecting the stability of the adsl.

Xenophyl: could you post your router model, ADSL speed/sync rate, line attenuation and SNR margins here?
Have you correctly installed filters for ALL your devices (fax, alarm, telephone, ADSL, etc.) which are connected to the Telkom line?
It really sounds to me like a broken/missing/incorrectly installed ADSL filter if your ADSL is working again after you made a phone call...

Luckily the 2 Telkom technicians that helped me and my colleagues, in Stellenbosch, were great. They really knew what they were doing and they've really done everything that's within their capabilities.

Yes, they are often insecure, seeking security by tunneling their own methods whilst dismissing the client. I would call 0800 375 375 and explain that to them. I would do that about twelve times and see which solution works. The way making a call fixes it could be the primary clue.

Calling the Telkom customer support (or whatever you call the 0800 375 375 service) is always a hit/miss situation.
Like when you just want to change your sync rate profile, some of the people might tell you that they can't do it and others would do it for you 24/7 as many times as you please.
So far I've had great success with reporting the telephone line issues online, and the techies came within 2 business days to attend to the problem.

I would also suggest phoning them, the 0800 375 375 line and just asking them to reset the line, thats fixed problems for us in the past. But a analog connected device without a decent filter could also cause the problem, unplug em all and see if the problem persists. Who uses land lines anyway :)

i had similar problem, but instead it was internet light being red not the adsl part

The way i fixed it was getting a TP-Link router ever since I got it I've never had a problem again.

The router I was using was a billion 400g router the line seemed to hate it not sure why

Hope this helps

^ :O, I indeed have a billion 400G, interesting

About the filters, like I said the technician was here a month ago when it was still happening. He apparently checked everything.

"could you post your router model, ADSL speed/sync rate, line attenuation and SNR margins here?"

Router: Billion 400G
ADSL speed/sync rate: 2.64 Mb/s (usually 3.2 Mb/s)
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 22.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 42.0 dB
SNR Margin(Upstream) 13 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 15.5 dB

I would ask them to sync you lower first - 2Mbps and see if that helps. If that doesnt work, the next thing you can try is to ask them to switch your port to a different one...just to test :).

Your attenuation and snr are better than mine and my line just about manages a 5Mpbs stable connection.

Doesn't your router report the sync rate? I'm not really interested in the actual download speed, since that is ISP account dependent.

With that kind of line attenuation you should be able to sync without issues at 6Mbps! I would do as saliehendricks said and change call Telkom to change the sync profile to 2Mbps first, only if your current sync profile is 4Mbps.
If your line seems to be 100% stable after the profile change to 2Mbps, I would really urge you to get a better router from a different brand like TP-Link or D-Link. Usually the D-Link routers perform quite well in poor conditions.

Upstream 512000
Downstream 4096000

Downstream was actually 3520000 a couple of hours ago, weird.
