I have the exact same car. When you replace the Cambelt, you also need to replace the following:
- Cambelt tensioner (I believe you did)
- Cam Belt idler bearings
- Water Pump (This is your most likely suspect)

Thanks for that information boerseun!
I'm having the same problem with the same car as well.
I found those to be the culprits with a Google search right before seeing your reply. Apparently a common problem with our engine.
Also my car has the engine light constantly on and is very sluggish, which apparently is the oxygen sensor in the exhaust which needs to be replaced.

Waterpump - I have the same engine and replaced my waterpump at the second cambelt service (150,000 km).

The O2 sensor on these models tend to go at about 120,000km and you will see that if you scan the ODB2 error list - your check engine light will also come on.

Another thing that you should replace at the same time along with the waterpump us the thermostat. It tends to get stuck on Open so your car never reaches normal operating temperature when you drive.

Mine has done 180,000+ km now and is still going strong - brilliant cars these

Hi guys,
I have Opel Astra 1.6 CDE 2001 model.
It had some clicking noise inside the engine next to cambelt I was told is Cambelt tensioner and it was replaced but the problem was not solved.

I booked at GM, when I was on my way to, about 100Kms I had that the noise is no longer clicking but it was on going, Immediatley when I check the temperature i find that it was one minut no get in Red I stop the car immediately, when I try to start again it just turn the starter but never started.

I opened the engine hood and find that there was water under the engine and inside the container it was boiling at half.

It seems as the water was commimng under where there is cam belt.

Now the car is no longer starting.

Can any one help me with what it might be and how can i solve the problem?

Yes, that is your water pump, see my post above yours.

On these cars it is recommended to replace the waterpump with every second cambelt service, thus every 150,000km. It's a pity mechanic did not do that on your car. From the sound of it I'd say you engine is dead now, time for a new car.

Yes, I agree with Rouxenator. Most probably the water pump has ceased up and has broken your cambelt.

The GM Charged me R1500-00 to strip the engine and find out what happened fortunately the Head Cylinder, The head block and Head gasket where fyne.

Those prices do not seem to bad, I paid R8000 (parts and labour) for my 150,000km service which included a cambelt change, waterpump change and a coolant hose replacement. Two year later I paid R2000 to have just the thermostat replaced.

This was at a very reputable mechanic in Stellenbosch and NOT a GM service center. So I'd say your prices seem good - but I would get rid of that car ASAP. Once an Opel start giving nonsense like this then its a slippery downhill slope you are on. It will just keep on giving more and more problems. Get another (newer) one that has not had any knocks like this.

....Or better yet never buy a Opel again. I have one very happy with it but you seem to have a dud.

You get duds in every brand, this is not an Opel specific problem. If I was him I would sell the car and get a reasonably low mileage Corsa C.

Thanks, fixed the typo and gave credit where due.

Opels are excellent cars if they are well looked after. Go have a look at the mileage these Astra G models clock up in autotrader, I have spotted a few that are close to or over 300,000km

I actually have a detailed spreadsheet with all expenses (except petrol) of my Astra. It's not expensive to keep the car in good shape and these 1.6 16v Ecotec units does go like hell when they are properly maintained.

What you need to keep in mind is that because cars are complex mechanical things it is hard to generalize. Sure, you do get high failure rates in certain models but I'd say the Astra G is a pretty solid car. As I pointed out in this thread there are some things that are well known to fail on these cars after it had done a given mileage but most mechanics that are worth their keep should know this.

We all know you are a VAG fanboi / Rouxenator hater and that's cool, I would not expect any other type of response from you and to a degree I enjoy a bit of trolling (giving and receiving). Factually however I can state that Opels are excellent cars and the Astra G is a good model. It is sad that Opel is so underrated in South Africa but I guess that makes them more unique and it is one of the things I like about them.

I have had and still do have a lot of fun in my old Astra.
