Hi

I seem to be having a problem with my tv remote. It takes about 15 minutes for the remote to start working after the tv has been switched on even if you put in new batteries. Any idea what the problem could be?

Any suggestions on where I can get a good universal remote?

Thanks:)

You could try removing the batteries for a day or two - there is a remote chance that one of the chips has gone into latchup and needs some time to reset. With the batteries removed you could also try to short the +ve and -ve terminals inside the remote together with a short piece of stranded wire to remove any stored charge.

Put the batteries in the remote, Take your cellphone camera and point it to the LED-like sender of the remote. Now push a button on the remote while looking at the camera screen. Did you see a flash from the LED-like sender thing (whatever you call it)?

Kept the batteries out from this morning and shorted the terminals - still the same - first ~15 minutes the remote doesn't work. Maybe the problem might be with the tv?

That would be my guess, the remote uses very simple electronics, even if it did contain a capacitor removing the battery for 1minute will have cleared it completely, and it would either work, or not... If you were physically abusing it before it works that's another story (Those DSTV remotes, always need a beating before they work, the things are so cheap and flimsy but they still have the balls to charge you R400 for it!).

What type of TV is it? Make and type (IE. Sony 50" LCD or whatever) and how old :) Also does it work perfectly after 15 minutes or is it erratic following the 15minutes?

LG 54cm Flatron. Just about 2 years old. Yeah, the remote works perfectly after that initial period.

My bet is on the TV being damaged...
Only way to know is to either buy a universal remote or get a replacement for the original.

First make really sure that it's not the remote itself. Turn off the TV and disconnect it for several hours just in case the IR receive circuitry has frozen. Try to ask at a TV repair shop in your vicinity to see if you can't borrow a suitable remote for a few hours. LG is a very popular brand so they might be able to help you.

I thought that the LG TVs came with very decent guarantees - 3 or 5 years but I may be wrong - read about my experiences with under warranty TV repairs though.

My JVC TV stopped working a few months after I bought it and I had to take it in for repairs which turned out to be a bit of a nightmare. The problem turned out to be a blown *tube* which they proceeded to fix. Apart from scratching and scuffing the unit which was essentially brand new they also lost my new remote and replaced it with a very worn secondhand one. After getting it back the colour seemed to be slightly out of adjustment and the writing on the screen was skew. Luckily after lots of complaining I did manage to get a new replacement but for a while I thought that I was going to be saddled with a lemon! I must say that the replacement has worked flawlessly for many years now.

If it's not under warranty LG also offer a free service once or twice a year.
