Hi guys,

Ok so I bought a Transcend StoreJet 25D3 1tb external usb 3.0.

When plugging it into my laptop's usb 3.0 port it works fine when copying data over. In this case a whole series. As soon as i want to watch the series from my external, I get about 5 minutes watch time when it suddenly loses connection, and then reconnects a second thereafter. Of course by then the movie player stops responding and says cant find file. I then reopen the file and the whole story repeats itself.

However when I insert the external into my usb 2.0 port it keeps a steady connection the whole time.

Is there a reason for it not working on the 3.0 and is there anything i can do to fix it?

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

The line/phase your usb3 port is on doesn't have enough current to get the drive instantly from spin-up to read/write. You say after 5 minutes, so it is probably when the drive goes into power saving, and then when your media player wants to read more files that the drive tries to spin up again but draws too much current and the voltage drops.

Try in power settings set it to never sleep/stop hard drives or something similar.

Report back :)

Ok so I went to advanced power settings/USB settings /USB selective suspend setting and disabled everything and hard disk/turn off hard disk after -->never . I also tried Device Manager/USB Root hub and made sure everything under Power management was deselected. But....nothing worked :(

Any other ideas?

Not sure if you can find dual plug USB 3.0 cable.
You say copying over 3.0 port works without problem. Try to copy large file/folder, so coping takes longer than avove mentioned 5 minutes.

First let's try to isolate the problem to either the hard drive or laptop. Can you try to replicate the issue on a friend's PC? And I mean a proper desktop machine with an ample power supply, not another laptop.

EDIT: Also, please try copying a large file/folder FROM the external hard drive. You said you copied a large file to the external which took about 16 mins, please copy that file back to the laptop's internal hard drive and see if anything weird happens.

Not sure it was said or not, but +1.

Ok so went to a friend, plugged it into his USB 3.0 port. Copied data over and watched a movie. No connection loss at all

I copied all of the external data back to my laptop internal. Took a whole hour. No connection loss.

Its starting to get clear to me I'm just not suppose to do anything with the data on the external. If I want to, I first have to copy it to my desktop, and when I'm done copy it back.

Okay, I guess it has something to do with the power supply in your laptop then. As agentrfr said:

Unfortunately, it's not always possible to disable sleep mode if it's programmed into the device's firmware. Some manufacturers release software to help you change these settings. You'll need to check if it's the case with Transcend. I saw some downloads for it here: http://www.transcendusa.com/Support/No-277

Otherwise, simply use the USB2.0 connection when watching movies/series and 3.0 to transfer.

If firmware update doesn't help, search for new drivers for your USB chipset.
Connect drive to USB 3.0 port, then go to Device Manager, select View -> Devices by Connection,
then expand all USB controller branches to find out on which controller Transcend is connected to. Try to update drivers from Windows by selecting controller properties. If doesn't help, make note of controller details, your OS revision (service packs) and search Internet for similiar case.

My suggestion:

Get a new USB 3.0 cable, even if you think everything is fine after your test with your friend.

I had the same issue. External worked fine at work, refused to work at home, replaced cable, fixed it.

Secondly. Turn your laptop off. Unplug the power from the laptop. Remove the battery from the laptop. Whilst off, press the on/power button of the laptop and hold it in for 30 seconds. Then press it about 2 or 3 times for good measure as if you are switching it on. This discharges the laptop.

Reinsert battery and power, turn on and test again.
