One of my friends cannot access mail.ovation.co.za using 3G (mostly GPRS mode, he is living on a farm). However, others using Telkom's ADSL can access it without any hassles.

Any ideas?

Can you resolve the URL with nslookup?

If you do get an IP, can you access the site with that?
The IP is 196.35.64.146, we cannot load that either:

The connection has timed out
The server at 196.35.64.146 is taking too long to respond.

What is the problem you are experiencing? I am able to connect to the url via MTN GPRS no problem, however its not my mail client so I cannot test properly.

I had a problem sending mail the first time I used GPRS. It seens as if the particular mail account did not allow me to send mail if connected to vodacom GPRS.

The problem was resolved setting my outgoing mail server to smtp.vocacom.co.za

Hope this helps.

I can see the site using a proper 3G connection, seems to be related to a time-out setting on the mail.ovation.co.za server.

Are you using Outlook Express, by any chance?

It's got a funny quirk in that it will pop up a message that it could not see the smtp server for a certain period (say 60 seconds). You then think it timed out although it's actually still busy sending. It's a function of the mail size / connection speed.

So you'll see this with either large mails, a slow link or the combination.

Try sending a blank mail to test.

He is, but even the web based access times out.

But don't stress about it any further, he is looking at an alternative (for his site and e-mail hosting). He is still quite happy with the Vodacom 3G service.

The other option would be to ask the current web host to increase the Apache timeout on the mail.ovation.co.za server.

thanks for taking the time ;)

I can ping that site with Vodacom 3G
