Hey

I have an unusual prob that is having me tear he last remaining hairs from my balding patch.

On my original PC and smaller p4 laptop, my E220 (USB flavour) works Perfectly. (to test the modem, I installed the software into mentioned laptop and it worked first time - (again)).

Now on my works laptop (Dell Precision M90) and my new PC .... It acknowledges the Huawei E220 as an USB memory stick, but not as a modem.?!

All machines are running XP Pro, with latest SP's etc

The Only thing I can think of is that these two problematic machines have dual CPU's.!?

I have done countless searches for E220 problems with dual CPU's - nothing.

Searched for any problems with E220. - (lots of them, but nothing that guided me in any direction)

I have downloaded, installed and tried numerous firmware versions - nothing.

Please assist.

Thank you

It could be the infamous 'drive letter' problem where a CD / DVD program is trying to grab the drive letter assigned to the modem.

Search on this forum for the solution and try that. Search specifically for posts by 'ginggs'. He wrote the how-to.

You did not mention the host OS, so maybe look at flashing the modem to the latest version that supports Vista.

Open up Device Manager, find the USB Mass Storage device, right-click on it, then choose 'Update Driver...', choose not to connect to Microsoft and then allow Windows to automatically install the best driver. With a bit of luck Windows will redetect it as a USB Composite Device and then the modem and control port will then be detected as well.

Sometimes it is necessary to choose 'Uninstall' instead of 'Update Driver...' and then get Device Manager to scan for new hardware.

Thanks Guy's, I appreciate the quick responses.

I have tried what you have suggested ginggs, but to no prevail.
I tried re-installing, uninstalling, even logged off as myself, then on again as administrator and re-did the whole process.Still the same, as I plug it in, it only see's it as a CDrom, loads that as a driver and nothing else.

I also tried to 'disable' the built in modem on the Dell laptop, in case there was conflicts... nothing.

What I've also been trying, was to run the 'application' files on the 'USB mem drive' but these only Briefly open up a DOS box, and then shut down again.

Did your E220 come with two USB cables? Try using the one with two USB Type-A plugs on it, maybe your new laptop cannot supply sufficient power on one USB port.

What happens if you go to My Computer, and find the emulated CD-ROM drive, do you see files on it?
What happens if you double-click on the setup program?

Good Evening Guys.

I tried the longer cable ... still nothing.

On the Emulated CD-Rom drive you Can see file there-on, but trying to run Any of the 'application' files briefly pop's up a dos box, and then nothing further.... (See enclosed screen grab.)

MrNutz... The same enclosed screen grab, also holds the expanded device manager.

Thanks guys, once again

Alan

PS.... I've been trying to attach the jpg screen grab I took.... just to see that on my 'posting rules' I can't 'post attachments'.??
Could I send it directly to one of your Email accounts.?

Hey Guy's

I've uploaded the photo to "Home/member Galleries/ Alan Searle.

I have to down scale the resolution slightly, the original was just over 400k.

Please let me know if this will help.

Thanking you in advance.

Unfortunately, it's scaled down too much for me to make out what's going on there. These following should help make a better screenshot:
  1. Change Device Manager's view to "Devices by connection", this will allow you to fit just the relevant USB devices into the window.
  2. Use Alt-PrtScn to grab just the active window instead of Ctrl-PrtScn which grabs the entire screen.
  3. After pasting the image into Paint, save the image as a PNG file instead of a JPG. PNG is lossless and good for images with large extents of a single colour and sharp transitions from one colour to another (text), JPG is lossy, but good for natural scenes.

Getting back to your device that being detected as a Mass Storage Device and not a Composite device, try the procedure described here:
http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?p=865648
Take note that from step 8 the procedure is described for Windows Vista, so things might be named a little differently in XP.

Good Evening Ginggs

Thank you for your continued persistence.

The .png files are at the following link.

As the notes attached to the two files say, the first is as requested, the screen shot of the computer management window... the second image are the details from the driver, and screen shot of the 'application files' on the USB stick as well.

Note they're not even seen as 'applications' - rather as 'file folders' instead.

I tried the walk-through you posted back in Feb 07.... I got as far as step 11, but the system did not acknowledge the directory as having the necessary drivers. So it stops saying that no drivers were found at that location, so I can either 'finish' or 'go back' to select another location...

(Is it possible that re-installing Windows may correct this.?? These two particular computers that I am trying to use the E220 on were Not initially set up by myself.
Of course then I'd need to get past my works IT dept to try and explain Why I'm needing the reformat 'their' laptop.)

Thank you
Alan

Just for interest, you don't perhaps have ghost or something similar installed on the non working machine? Any backup utility trying to back up new drives on the machine.

That is very weird, have you done a virus scan on the PCs in question lately?

You can grab a zip file containing just the drivers here, make a note of where you download and extract the files, and direct Windows to use those drivers.

Yes, I think that executable files showing up as file folders in your Explorer is a sign that something might be wrong with your Windows installation.

Remove modem

Get a techie 2 remove the modem in the system. Laptops that come with built in modems gives lotsa hells.

Any progress on the M90/E220?

Hi Alan

I have the same setup as you: Dell Precision M90, Win XP, Huawei E220 USB. And I think I have the same problem! Did you make any progress? I had the Vodacom tech here today (great service), but unfortunately he was really a button clicker, try as he did. I think its a fairly complicated hardware problem. I dont have any of the CD/DVD accessing type software installed. My machine just cannot see the device as a modem. No matter what I do. I can see the whole virtual CD drive, as well as the mass storage device, but I cannot convert it to a composite device per the instructions elsewhere on the forum. I think those may be Vista specific: I cannot get to where I can select a generic USB device (cant get a list). I installed it on a desktop machine, no problems at all, so I am fairly convinced its the laptop.
