Ok, so finally after 2 and a half weeks I have a steady line again, it only sync's at 1mb but at least I have a usable line. I'll start hounding telkom again today to get it sync'ing at 4mb again.
I'm pretty sure the only reason I got them to fix my line was the fact that the one techie made the fault of phoning me from his cell phone which gave me a number at which I could hound him until it was sorted. The first time I phoned him back he said he tried to phone the home phone but there was no answer so he left it.
I must have heard every possible reason under the sun the last few weeks about why my line was dropping the whole time from lightning blew out the cards in the DSLAM, to my modem is broken to heaven only knows what else. It turns out there was a fault on the line between my house and the telkom pole. Why it takes 2.5 weeks and at least 5 different techs looking at the problem (without visiting my house once, 3 of them just tested the dslam apparently and marked the fault as fixed, the other 2 just passed it on to somewhere else) nobody knows, especially after the tech who finally got to my house yesterday told me they are not really busy.
Another thing that gets me is all the excuses from the call center and a good example is I would phone one morning a be told a tech is on site at the exchange to look at it. When I phoned again later in the day I was told my fault has not been assigned to a tech yet.
