Hi

I have the HSDPA USB Modem from vodacom that I'm using on a laptop.

I'm using a client to connect to a server on port 2000(main server) and port 2001(test server). Using Telnet I can go into the server on port 2001 but not on port 2000.

If I disconnect the HSDPA modem and connect to normal telkom dial up, I can connect via telnet on both ports.

Now I would like to know if anyone might know what the problem might be? Seeing that Vodacom doesn't block any ports and my firewall is turned off, I'm stumped for an answer.

Maybe PM me your contact details and I'll test with you. Got a few ideas. If you're already provisioned for the internetvpn apn, you can give that a try, but I'd prefer for you to stay on the internet apn. It's got more back-end power.

gedeswardt, got your PM, thanks but I really would like to talk to you and not your modem :D

Won't you PM me YOUR contact details? :)

Hi v3g

Is there anything you can suggest that I can try so long to see where the problem is?

Hi v3g,

I tried using a dialup connection tonight and if I telnet into port 2000 I get a text message (Hi, and welcome to Eternal Lands. If you are new to the game etc etc ). So it looks like the connection we thought we had this afternoon was not successful at all :(

Any ideas?

Hi v3g

Last night I used my sellphone as a modem and could telnet into port 2000 and get a proper response. The only thing is that my sellphone is with MTN

So currently port 2000 is accessable from normal dial-up and from mtn sellphone.

Ok, busy looking into it.... in the mean-time, try and do some work around the home, (instead of playing on-line games!!) ;)

LOL, thats why I only found out about the problem now and not 2 months ago. Way too much DIY :D

Here is the address for reference game.eternal-lands.com

This issue has now been resolved :)
Thanx v3g and Ramon

For everyones' info, what we found here is that this app uses port 2000 which is a well-known port for another application (MCCP / Skinny). Because the content is 'malformed' according to our in-line engines they dumped the packets, effectively cutting the user off from the server.

We've bypassed the port 2000 inspection but the right way would be for the person hosting the gaming application to pick an open port and not use the same port number as already assigned to another app.

@v3g, Q: what about port 7643? - I am currently using that for a certain server I have running off of ADSL, but if I ever make the effort to fallback to HSDPA-UnrestrictedAPN when ADSL is down, I am wondering if I might run into the same sort of problem - btw using 7643 for https.

No idea. You should be able to look up the list of well known ports. Can you assign the port yourself? If so, go high.....>10000 is probably quite safe. I use 41000+ for my own stuff. Also have some telnet ports on 20023+

I haven't tested it with a different external port, but I could probably use a different external port to the one that is forwarded internally - I can also change the internal port number but I don't feel like doing that - took long enough for me to remember to include the port number after the host name - I kept forgetting to type in the port number :o.

You can pretty much pick any port you like and it should work. But there is a generally accepted protocol with IP that you honour so-called 'well-known' ports.

The trouble comes in when providers have in-line engines and these expect the ports to behave in a certain way and they then don't.

Like in the case with port 2000. The scanners picked it up as malformed skinny packets and dropped them.

A few ports have been giving me grief. When trying to connect to a SSL IRC port my connection to the IRC server just drops.
eg.
[16:18:02] Connecting to irc.shadowfire.org (7000)
[16:18:04] [10053] Software caused connection abort
[16:18:04] Disconnected
Is this a problem on my sides (I tried doing this on 2 different PC’s – same problem), or is this some kind of limitation that I’m not aware of when using 3G?

I have the same problem and i am usign HSDPA USB Modem would you help me Pleaaaaaaaaase.

Any One Can Tell Me How To Solve This Problem PLEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAASE.

Just want to know if the work around that was put in, is still there? The reason for this is cause I can't seem to connect anymore to the game on port 2000.

Regards
