I've been experiencing sending SMS's when on the university of pretoria's campus.

What happens is it'll work fine then all of a sudden any sms's i send will sit in my outbox until i switch my phone on and off again, i'm not the only person with this problem. This is only happening when using a 3g phone and only on vodacom.

Here's the cellid's and signal strength(all three are picked up in the same location):

59333 -83 to -87dbm
55991 -85 to -87dbm
55883 -83dbm to -102dbm

I would really appreciate it if you can look into this V3G.

Mine's a nokia 6680 wit firmware v4 32k sim, one of my mate's is also a nokia 6680 firmware v3 64k sim, both are doing it.

Hi there,

I seem to be having similar issues with my nokia 6680.
Sorry am not technical but when entering *#0000#
i get
v 2.05.15
04-03-05
RM-36

I am sitting at Sita which is situated right at the John Vorster offramp in centurion. It only seems to happen when there is 3g signal, i cant sms or call. When the phone shows there is no 3g it works. This only happens at the sita building, not sure if it is a tower that i am connecting to causing the problems

any help would be gr8t thanks

I ask bcos I assume smses are sent [and received] on the normal 2G network which might explain why smses would sit in the outbox until the 6680 is forced to use 2G [probably when you move to an area where there is no 3G signal at all]...v3g?

I hope not ic, as that would be monumentally stupid of Vodacom.

Do you mean it would be stupid to continue to use the existing tried & tested 2G network to carry smses as opposed to carrying smses on the 3G network?

IMO smses are legacy instant messages, whereas you can run an IM client on your phone at a fraction of the per byte cost of an sms, why should Vodacom or any network provider, spend development time & money on transmitting smses over 3G?

I mean, if Vodacom did not have the sms facility available on 3G, then why would Joe Soap use the 3G band at all? If Joe Soap has a 3G phone, he would want to sms apart from doing phone calls, and all phones will select the 3G band if the signal is available.

If I had to guess, 3G is only a new frequency and modulation scheme, the sms system runs irrespective of the frequency band selected. V3g, care to comment?

It happens on 2g & 3g. I checked today i can't make or recieve calls once this has occured, when i reset the phone it works again.

The latest software version for the 6680 is version 5.This version was only released a few weeks ago.Sms problems and can't make or recieve call are software related.Version 5 is VODAFONE LIVE only. This new software will fix these problem.

Can any one confirm that the newest software for the 6680 is v5 can't find anything on it on the web.

I don't have info on version 5. 4.04.07 is still the latest approved and nothing new has been received for testing.

grim, shaunM, I see you're both on v2 of the firmware, so I'd suggest do an upgrade to v4 to see if it won't address your problem. I'm not seeing the same issues on my 6680. On v2 I had a fair number of issues that normally required a phone reboot to get it to work.

SMS's are delivered immediately irrespective of bearer.
