Having trouble staying connected to BIS on my BB8900 (OS 5)

It has been going on since I got the phone but to make it more interesting, the problem only occurs at certain places. (for example at home and other areas I dont have any problems, but like clock work, when I get close to Tygervalley, cape town, my internet services stop working, even though still showing I am connected on EDGE (BIS connected). When I run the diagnostics it indicate I am not able ICMP ping. Current solution, switch radio on and off and then I have internet connection for a while.

Actions taken to date:
1) Receive new service books from vodacom
2) Hard booting
3) Getting the hosting tables again (a few times)
4) Downgrading & upgrading the firmware (back to os 4.6 and back to os 5)
5) Running the tool to wipe the firmware and reinstall the firmware (using BB swiss army knife app)
6) Deregister the blackberry on BIS and re-registring it
7) Having a vodacom BB specialist look at the network settings to see if they all correct
8) Having their advance data team check my line and confirm there is nothing wrong on it.

Having spoken to the BB guys, they cant think of anything else to do

Now they want me to send the phone up to Blackberry in jhb, but not sure how they can replicate the problem that side, because sending the phone up just for the sake of sending it up does not make sense

Is there any other ideas out there on what I should be trying (settings, etc.) or a suggestion on the way forward.

There could be something wrong with your phone. Let me guess that you're on Vodacom - remember their edge coverage is awful and extremely patchy. My friend with an 8520 has a similar problem but her phone usually shows SOS or gprs.

The same thing happens to me when travelling between home and Cape Town. I lose signal only in certain areas; sometimes I need to turn the network connection off and on, sometimes I don't.

To be clear if it's happening to both of you then it's because there is no vodacom edge signal in some of those places. There's nothing you can do about it (perhaps tell vodacom to stop being so cheap about edge) or move to MTN where 90% of the network is covered by edge (compared to 40% on Vodacom). Also remember vodacom sometimes turns off edge when they offer 3G in an area. Don't bother sending your phone away there's nothing wrong with it.

Yep, I just wanted to say that I experience the same thing, hehe, I was in a bit of a rush when I posted :) But I experienced bad signal with my previous phones (Nokia, SE) as well, so it IS just Vodacom with their crappy service.

I also have a BB8900 (OS5) and BIS also seem to disappear some times then turning the radio on and off makes it work again.. Also durbanville and cape town most of the time..

So the moral of the story is "If Blackberry = true, then Vodacom = false?"

I think the people at Vodacom should've admitted to having crappy signal in certain areas, instead of making you go through all that trouble for nothing. There's nothing wrong with the Blackberry :)

well tried to get a new SIM card (had a 32k card in my phone). So went down to the vodacom shop and asked for a new SIM for my blackberry, got it and put it on the next day when the SIM was activated.. guess what, they gave me a Data-SIM, so now I keep getting my connection to the network dropped totally (not just BIS)

Well here is going back to Vodacom to see if they can sort out this problem.

Do you have a 64k sim card, and if you do have one, check on the back of the card that it doesn't say 4101 or 9202.

Vodacom networks are congested !!!! I went away for about a week from joburg - I had the most awesome and excellent coverage one could imagine downloaded around 1 gig a day or so. Now I am back home and the service always keeps dropping me.

I doubt a 64K sim card will make a difference but I am moving over to MTN by Sunday because this is ridiculous
