Hi guys,

And first post, so hello all. :)

I have been having major hassles for the last month now to interact with a few forums that are specifically using Invision Power Boards software. System is correctly set-up and there are two PCs on the ADSL connection running IE, Firefox and on my main system even running Ubuntu with Firefox. All browsers in the various combinations give exactly the same results. That is, I will enter the forum and be asked to login which never used to be the case in the past since I always have it remember to login. The forums themselves which are not local and are visited throughout the day internationally is working fine considering how many people are posting and so on. At my work these forums seem to allow me to stay logged in though once initially logging in at the start of the session - again, never required this once "remember" is ticked.

To give background, I was using ABSA ADSL up until Atlantic took it over mid February and turned service into no-service. But while I was with ABSA and just before the no-service effect took place I was having no problems whatsoever with these forums. I then moved over to Axxess and went for their ADSL 3GB shaped account which I am perfectly happy with, just not the forum issue. I have reported this to them and in turn they have queried with SAIX - no fault on their side so they say, and must be a fault with these boards... Right...

Any ideas what could be the cause of this? I think it is fair to say that the fault is not with the boards or with my connection since everything else works and browsing other forums (locally and international) which use different software seems to be working perfectly, can only be something local. I am also pretty sure that it is an IP address issue since your user account is linked to your IP address. But as in the past, I never had any problems when interacting with these forums from both home or at work and never had to login unless of course I cleared the browser. Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Kind regards,

Philip.

Two things: Check that your line is stable. If it's constantly reconnecting in the background then that will cause the described effect. Secondly, some people reported that using the Telkom cache fixed that problem.

As far as I know, as I've run on IP Boards at had the same issue(I still do), it has to do with Dynamic IP Address's when they constantly change. IPB has a code in it which refreshes the IP every time you reload the page.

So in the end it's the IP and the IPB(Invision Power Board). The only way to get rid of this problem is to contact the Admin of the Board and tell him/her you're having this problem. I'll reply to this post to tell you what the Admin must do in the config.php of the board itself(I need to ask my friend again, I forgot but it works, trust me, it stops the constant checking of new IP Address's).

Otherwise you're out of luck besides a slow proxy.

Matt. :)

Hi guys,

Thank you all for your replies and help. Touch wood I think I have this fixed. After going through the various threads linked above I found this thread which had the solution at the bottom : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=75248&page=2

Got Firefox on both Windows and Ubuntu to stay logged in at the various forums where I was experiencing fault. So for me, in Firefox, all I did was put "cache.saix.net" and port 8080 for http under the network settings. Will keep an eye on it though...

All the best,

Philip.

Not every forum admin will bother changing his configuration just because you have dynamic IP problems.

And so far so good, been able to browse and interact as normal, will still keep an eye on it though...

Thanks again guys!

Philip.
