I am using a Falcom Tango GPRS modem to connect to the internet. I am able to connect fine. However when I try and ping my computer from a diffrent pc on a ADSL line. The pings never reach. Is there a way around this problem?
thanxs in advance

madman, why do you need to ping the PC, other than checking connectivity?

Because so many hackers use ICMP Reachability packets (PING) to find hosts to attack, most networks don't pass these packets anymore. This is the case with Vodacom 3G as well.

So incoming PINGs are blocked to try and protect you from these port scanners.

Don't think so. ICMP blocking is a seperate issue to issuing routable addresses, so I don't think it will work.

The only reason we normally ping someone is to check connectivity (in this case madman is connected) or to test latency.

madman, have you tried pinging in the opposite direction?

Madman,

If your IP's are in the 10.x.y.z range, no luck buddy. If you are using the VPN APN, I think Vodacom blocks the pings. You can however ping smtp.vodacom.co.za and www.google.co.za from the 3G/GPRS side....

The issue is that your ADSL has an internet IP address while your vodacom3g has a private IP address and thus your packets can not route there.

I suspect pinging in the other direction will work fine but it will be impossible to ping the vodacom3g.

Also dont forget the windows xp firewall tends to block pings.
