hi everyone

i recently acquired a samsung series 6 LED TV (not sure of the model number, i only know it has 2 hdmi ports), a 2 tuner PVR decoder, a PS4, and a samsung home theatre system HT-H5550K

so i'm having 3 problems

1) i don't get surround sound while watching DSTV, the DSTV is connected to the home theatre system with the aux cables (red and white), should i try optic cables here?

2) i can't connect the PS4 to anything now really, because i don't have an optic cable to connect it to the home theatre and both the HDMI connections on the TV are taken one for picture from the DSTV one for sound from the home theatre system (which isn't even surround sound now), isn't there a set of adapters i can by to give me more optic cable and/or HDMI space?

3) finally, although it shoulda probably gone first, i don't get surround sound from the home theatres system when playing dvds surround speakers work on tone test, but are silent when normal TV or DVD is playing

any help will be appreciated

kind regards

MikhailK

1) The red and white cables are stereo only. You'll have to use optic. Problem is you only have 1 optical input, so you can't connect your DSTV and PS4.

2) You can get something like this: http://www.takealot.com/lenkeng-3d-3x1-hdmi-switch/PLID32716129
But that will only solve half of your problem, you won't have surround on either your DSTV or your PS4 (only one optic in on surround system and no HDMI in).

3) Flog the surround system and buy a proper receiver and speakers. It's going to cost a bit, but currently you're going to need at least 3 adapters to get everything connected and then you still may not have surround.

Option A:
You need something like this: http://www.catsdigital.co.za/home-a...ievers/denon/denon-avr-x1000-av-receiver.html

Not necessarily that specific one, I know nothing about that model, but an AV Receiver like that. It's expensive, because you still need to get speakers to go with it. But that has 6 HDMI inputs, so you run everything to that and then one hdmi cable to your TV, problem solved. That is expensive though.

Option B:
If you're on a budget, which everyone is, then perhaps get something like this: http://octavainc.com/HDMI switch 4port_toslink.htm

It switches HDMI and optical. So you run ALL HDMI to that, and optic from DSTV and PS4 to it as well (same port number as the respective HDMI sources. The you run the optic out to your surround sound system and the HDMI out to your TV.

Lastly I have no idea why your surround is not working, it could be one of many things.

Does the Home Theatre support HDMI?

****

I see that it does, which makes life very simple. It supports ARC (Audio Return Channel) and so does your TV.

Plug the HDMI from surround sound into the ARC port on the TV, normally HDMI 2 on Samsungs but it will be marked.

Now any audio from any HDMI device plugged into the TV and the TV itself will play through the surround.

You might need to switch on the Anynet+ option on the TV and surround system to make it auto switch. Otherwise just select "TV" on the surround sound system.

Anynet will also make one remote work for both.

If DSTV has HDMI start using that instead. Otherwise just use Optical from the decoder as said before to get 5.1.

Reasons 5.1 might not be playing on the DVD itself (presumably the one inside the surround sound system?) is that you selected an incorrect sound mode. Or less likely with a setup like this but possible is that you have A/B channel settings and switched one off.

Problem is the HT system doesn't have HDMI in, so he only has one port left on the TV. The ACR will help though, as he then just need a HDMI switch running to the other port, taking the DSTV and PS4 as inputs, no?

You need an HDMI switch that supports audio extraction via Optical

Something like this -> http://www.avsupply.co.za/product_info.php/4x1-hdmi-switcher-with-toslink-digital-coaxial-port-p-671

I have a similar setup at home. I plug my Xbox into the home theatre with HDMI. That home theatre should have 2 HDMI inputs, so if your PVR has HDMI out you can also plug that into the home theatre. Then connect the HDMI output on the home theatre to the TV. So your HT can switch between HDMI 1 and 2 and the TV stays on HDMI. Then all your viewing will use the HT speakers. I hope you can get a similar setup working.

You can buy an HDMI hub, where you have the hub HDMI cable into tv, and then split using the HDMI ports on the HUB. thus you you can plug in the PS4 and whatever else use HDMI cables.

I know Game sells an HDMI hub, which acts very much similar to a USB Hub
