This was covered slightly in the Mammoth thread and didn't want to derail it :o

Pls provide your input:

On my Rogue I have 375 Skinng but only 306 or 309 Enchanting. I was thinking of dropping enchanting and take LW to compliment my skinning.

With WoTLK I want to do thing right from the start. I can always lvl enchanting with another char. As I messed up on my enchanting due to me selling all the mats while lvl'ng my rogue. It became a money machine instead of lvl'ng it.

On my Shaman I have mining and herbalism. This I think I'll keep for farming purposes. On my Lock I have Tailoring and Alch.....

I dono, what do you guys thing ?

In my very humble opinion ...

Drop enchanting - it becomes _VERY_ expensive to get it to 375 from here.

If you ENJOY crafting, go for LW ... otherwise take up mining / herbs. I took skinning / mining on my rogue (1st char) and I made a killing. I was on 1k before i hit lvl 40, and 5k before I hit lvl 70. I've bought epic mounts for quite a few of our guildies & never struggled with gold. - I also never got to experience the fun side of crafting profs.

Sure you can make yourself extra stuff through leatherworking - but a few raids down the line and you replace them with better drops. Besides, you earn a permanent stamina buff for all that mining you've done - and extra crit strike % buff for knowing the soft spots from all your skinning.

Most BoE items are still very good - and with your income from mining/skinning you have more than enough $ to buy it off the AH. Once you hit lvl 80 where dailies will be your main source of income, you can decide to drop one for a crafting profession.

But that's just me.

Maybe I should drop all my crafting proffs and just do gathering proffs :D
like on my Shaman :p

I had this on 2 toons - mining/skinning herbing/skinning and it makes you loads and loads of gold, but i enjoy having a crafting prof, it feels like you doing something for yourself.

I now have mining / jc and herb/skinng on my alt - gonna go inscription or alch, still deciding

There's 1 thing I will disagree with here, and thats the leatherworking. Sure you'll be replacing the items BUT the LW-only item enhancements are bloody amazing. Adding spare slots to your gloves and bracers and 120ap enchants on each are totally worth it :P

I like the leg enchants :o

Yea, maybe I should just replace Enchanting with LW on my Rogue, he will then be self sufficient.... :o

Well the leg ones are BoE,but the gloves and hands are lw-only ;)

Fair enough - I speak with knowledge only of TBC era leatherworking. I was surprised to see a BoP enchant for LW last night by one of my guildies.

Either way - for a rogue, leatherworking will be good. Nice thing is you can make leather AND mail items that you can sell. (although its very rare to have something sell for more than the mats were)

SN: Erm, why are you back to 999 posts?

Think replies to a spammer post were removed :)

*1k Now

The new leg enchants are BoP I saw one linked in chat the otherday. I think it might just be one that is LW specific and then you also get the normal BoE's

Man I'm such a nubcaek...

I only realised now that Staalbal == Pitbull. *g* I was JUST about to mention "Speak to Pitbull, he's got a rogue & shammy as well! "

lol :D

edit: but tbh, when it comes to crafting proffs, i have always lagged behind :o

Though I knew he was talking about the BC ones ;)

i found enchanting very useful for raiding.

My problem with leatherworking, tailoring and blacksmithing is that if you are raiding a lot, then the gear from raiding is generally far superior. You might get 1 or 2 items from your profession which are better, but think of the cost of leveling that profession just for those few items.

Enchanting helped more with raiding. Being able to enchant my gear without looking for someone who can do it was nice. I also made a lot of cash selling surplus mats. I used to disenchant all the greens i got from dailies, which was loads. Also note that with the help of an inscriber you can trade your enchants, including putting them on the AH.

However, if its an alt, it probably not worth it. If its your main and you intend raiding with that character, keep it. Thats what I would do.

I now have 3 lvl 70's going to be working their way to 80.

My biggest problem is weighing up the odds.

My guild does raids, so spending all that money for gear that will be redundant is kinda useless. The other thing is the Proff specific crafts. Enchanting was the ring enchants. Again all that work for such a small gain.

My logic thinking is to just get gathering skills, make a crap load of money and buy what ever I want/need. Now this leaves one with 2 things to choose from.

1. Prof specific gains
2. Lots and lots of Gold

Which one to choose is the problem :D

Alchemy is the only prof that really makes money. Selling flasks and pots 2hours before peak raid start time is a winner. With most people leveling, that wont happen for a few weeks.

How many leg enchants is you average raider going to be needing every week? How many flasks and pots are they gonna need?

The other foolproof method of making gold is to not spend it pwr leveling professions, or buying gear on the AH. Financing your alts professions is the biggest gold sink there is. Ask me. I know. :)

I have an addon(i think its fu-money or something), which shows my sessionm, daily and weekly cash flow. I was amazed to discover that i was raking in 1.5k to 1.8k gold per week. And spending 95% of it. This was at lvl 70 while i was raiding, leveling alts, doing dailies etc. I think a Kara run could gets you loads of gold. And we where clearing it in 4hrs before the nerf. I would run Kara 3 times a week with 3 diff characters. ZA with at least 2 and then ofc blow it all on 3 evenings of wiping on Archimonde :)

Having leatherworking at 445 I can add my few cent. It cost me 3-4k gold to level to 440 since I was aiming for server first. (When I got to 441 some other guy got the 450 ding! :( )
The armor patches (epic leg ones) I made to get to 441 I then sold (there were 20 odd of them) and cashed in ~2300g. I had plenty of mats left I bought on AH and resold it and made another 1k gold. So in the end it only cost 1k gold to get from 375-441 ;)
I have now 445 and slowly getting to 450, no rush left. But having all those self enchants is really worth it.
And the leg enchants will sell like hotcake for some time still since people are changing pants almost on a daily basis with newer loot from heroics and raids.

Staalbal, Zippy makes a good point:

IF you want a crafting skill - start one that focuses on consumables. That way your customers keep coming back.

Ive been very fortunate with my rogue. I've never once bought a health (or any other) potion on the AH. I've macro'd my /cast pick pocket with my /cast sap action so everytime I sap a humanoid I automatically pick pocket him as well.

I've gathered tons of gold and health pots this way - not to mention lock boxes, gems and other goodies. My one rogue mate was complaining about health pots costing so much for raids 15g for a stack of 5, when I told him I had about 45 pots in my bank at any given time he nearly had a hissy fit.

I'm strongly considering herbalism / alchemy on my Dwarf Knight while my gatherer rogue remains the bank roller.

Well I am going to lvl my Lock to 80 first :)

He has tailoring and Alch. But Alch is very low still, I'll just farm herbs for it on my Shaman on the odd off day or brake I take from leveling :)

Will staill have to make up my mind for my Rogue. But I have plenty time to thin about that still :)
