Programatically enable / disable removeable drive

With the proliferation of Ransomware and its ability to encrypt files on all the drives attached to a computer, including the drive used for backup, I would like to disable the backup drive on completion of running a backup and to enable it again upon starting a backup. As this would run as a scheduled procedure, the enabling / disabling would need to run automatically.

Is there a solution which would run on Win 2008, Win 7, 8.1 or 10?

Yes, it would simply encrypt the encrypted file. It doesn't care about the contents or format of the file it's encrypting.

It's definitely possible. A simple vbscript and WMI.
