Progress?

Yep, I agree with ScrnScrm, exactly why I am seriously considering GPRS for an SMME with only 3 people that will be doing email only - data usage costing versus per minute dialup costs with Telkomonopoly, I think GPRS is a better peak-time option :).

ic a few articles gave me that impression. Here is one:
http://www.itweb.co.za/sections/tel...S=Mobile and Wireless Technology&A=MAW&O=FRGN

"Using third-generation (3G) technology, Vodacom will compete with both Sentech and Telkom to provide high-speed Internet access and other multimedia services, says Pieter Uys, Vodacom Group COO."

"Vodacom will also be looking to take on Telkom in rural areas, rolling out Internet and e-mail access to people in rural areas and in schools, Uys says."

They also state in the article :
“And unlike Sentech, which is having teething problems in rolling out its new network, Vodacom simply has to upgrade its base stations to 3G. About R100 million has been set aside for upgrades in high-density areas for corporate customers. We hope to provide 3G access to consumers for the December holidays. Capacity will then be increased where needed and the 3G availability will be enlarged,” he says.

This confuses me if they have so much less hassles, howcome Sentech are providing, in some cases faster service at a better price.

*This is quite an old article*

eh, decotey. "people in rural areas" and "the underprivaledged" are not the same thing... Hell, my cousin is a farmer in a "rural area" and he is loaded with $$$.

Must admit that service has improved in Durban. I am in the same location and much better signal this time round. Still not 100%, but much better. I can actually get a 3G signal and use it, even did a bit of Skype last night although the delays were greater than when I am in JHB. v3g, whats the link like between DUR & JNB?

Will ask on backhaul capacity.

Someone once told me Network Management is the management of a revolving set of bottlenecks, and in a rapidly growing network this is surely the case.

KZN rolled out a large number of 3G towers in the last month with another fair number going up this month, so the 3G coverage should have improved.

Maybe Tazz_Tux can also comment, I saw he's a banana boy as well. :)

Hey v3g,

Heard they rolled out 50+ sites this month with 30 +- per month for the next 2 or 3 months :)

Thanks Tazz_Tux

How is your own experience now in KZN?

Do you see a coverage improvement and what are the throughputs like?

Hey v3g,

Very Good - when I was on leave I had a GPRS session going for 1704 mins (no jokes !!!) and on 3G rates of 43-44k/s - pretty good :)

Laterz
