Can anyone give an idea of the projected future coverage of 3G? We currently have a lot of guys using the 3G cards but can only get GPRS because of the lack of 3G coverage. It's all well in saying that the networks are being rolled out etc. but to what extent, are they complete? Are we going to see a similair scenario when HSDPA is rolled out, only major suburban areas covered. I understand that this would be logical and bigger areas would be prioritised. It seems that even with the SNO coming in, 3G and HSDPA etc all the people in outlying areas are just going to have to wait for a good few years before getting anything better than dial-up or GPRS?

They have on the website www.mtn.co.za under coverage, they have interactive maps, the info is just not as comprehensive as that on the Vodacom map with reference to future coverage, it does however show their EDGE coverage which the VodaCom map doesn't

And their map is missing half of Durban !

We-eelll, according to the Vodacom coverage map I still don't have coverage from my house even though I've been enjoying 3 bar coverage for months now.

I'm still sure the best way to check for coverage is to take a 3G device (phone/datacard) and see for yourself.

The map is a computer simulation and I'm sure is only meant to be used as a guide, plus I'm pretty sure the network topology changes quicker than the map does...

I'm in the same situation, no projected coverage on the map but can work fine on 2 bars.

The planning guys try to err on the conservative side when putting the map out.

Finally got the map to work by opening Internet Exploits 6.0 and see that I also have 3G coverage where I am, but the map says no coverage. It would seem that they "err" too much?
Having said that, the map is very neat and works well (on IE). Could not zoom direct to street level (maybe I missed something), but that would be great.

I'm completely surrounded by live and proposed 3G coverage cells that all end about 0.5 km short of my house... v3g - do you wanna come put a mini cell up in my back yard to cover the gap :D

Check on the bottom right hand side of the window, it has search by suburb/street icon with a little binoccular, click on that and it opens a window with province/suburb/street search queries - should work?:)

Also, at the end of the day it's just a software prediction of coverage, not actual measurements taken. So the map is only as good as the software.
And as good as the latest GPS data - none of the areas that I was looking at, has been mapped as yet.

And it's not a Vodacom fault, somebody working with me got the latest GPS data/maps for Southern Africa a couple of days ago, those areas have not been added in detail yet (i.e. no street names, nevermind numbers).
