Anyways i know nothing about projector's but i was speaking to a friend who said that you can get good projectors for about 5k that use a 72" white screen.

they told me the quality is fantastic. So i was just wondering which would be better?

Having never used a projector i am not really to sure here but a 72" good projector image sounds alot better than 42" lcd for 12k.

A projector that costs R5000 will most likely have an 800x600 resolution or MAYBE a 1024x768. This won't come close to the resolution available on a 42" LCD tv, which will use 1900x1080 pixels.

i have seen one with 1280 but what is the picture quality like on a projector?

Is it really sharp and clear?

Well I have seen a few projectors (not sure of the cost though) and all of them don't come near the quality of a good LCD. Although I suppose the much bigger area available could make a movie/game more 'life-like'.

A projector image only looks nice if you use a decent screen or something to project it on. A 1280x1024 image doesn't look half bad for a movie or the odd game but is really gross for anything else.

I cant say that I have ever seen a projector that impressed me, actually I hate them...I always find them dull. I would go for LCD over a projector any day.

ever been to the movies/imax?

There's a very BIG difference between a data projector and a Home Theatre Projector - Don't be conned to think a R5k projector from hifi corp will give you the same quality. The LCD/Flat Panel will always be better if it's main viewing area as most Home Theatre Projectors don't operate very well in very bright light etc. Nothing beats a home theatre projector though if you're going for 90" screen+.

Keeper? I got the email with your response but I don't see it here? Wtf? I was just about to reply! ;) Did you get banned for flaming again? perhaps we have seen the last of that mongrel :D :D

I've used some nice and bright Acer data projectors, all using DLP technology. Compared to LCD based projectors, they are superior (fairly debated topic to be honest)

However, the resolution is just too low to be all that useful. I mean, 800x600 or 1024x768? Good grief no. Even though the screen is big, you'll still get the chicken wire effect if you look close enough.

no one has mentined the fact that the bulbs flake out in about a year of use in a projector and they are about R2.5 K
so cost of ownership is ridiculous

I've spent a lot of time using projectors and found that they last more than a year.

Some projectors also give off a lot of hot air. To the extent where you can't bear it in a smallish room

In all the time I've used them it's never gotten that bad. Sure, they give off heat and noise, but it's nowhere close to unbearable.

oh and that is just a plain ol wall, the screen itself, is stuck in the corner, was never bothered to erect it.
