Projector Setup

Who here has successfully set up a home-cinema, if so what brand of projector do you have and what are the perks over a Large LED TV
 
I'm using an Acer P1500, on an Esquire 3M screen. The results are pretty amazing, but the sound quality plays a huge role. (I'm using this)

Its not the most convenient thing compared to a TV though, as I've got to wait for the screen to unroll, and the computer to boot up, and one can't leave a projector running when you're not in the room for a while due to the lamp life.

If you're gonna sit close by the screen, rather get a big TV, my uncle has a 60" Samsung Smart TV and watching movies on it is amazing! Its incredibly clear.

But I still love to watch movies on my big screen :p

Did you buy extra bulbs?
What are you going to do when the lamp life is depleted?
 
Have a Samsung... can't remember the model number now.

Painted one wall of the lounge in white with a black border. Makes setting up a breeze. Just need to remove the paintings and we're good to go. Projector is ceiling mounted.

Have a UHD tv for the bedroom which is awesome but as Segg said.. watching on the big screen is a different ballgame. Feels like the movies without all the other schit that goes with it.

It's got a 5000 hour life, I've used about 80 since I put it in last October, so it'll last quite a while, when it does eventually pop I'll have to see whether it's more viable to buy a new projector, or buy a new lamp. I'd expect the lamps to be around R4k, I've never actually checked the prices though, but I know it's made by Osram (Acer love Osram bulbs by the look of it) and LightgGlo in Randburg have said they are able to source most projector bulbs (this was a few years ago that they told me though)
 
A projector setup certainly isn't for everyone. If you're one of those people who have the TV on 24/7 just to fill the background noise then give it a miss. If you cannot control the amount of natural light in the room then it's also not going to work for you.

That said if you like an immersive movie experience and can control the light in your room then go right ahead. I still get a kick out of seeing the expression on someone's face when they see that big screen light up for the first time.

I got an Epson 8350 a few years back and I'm still on the original lamp with quite a few hours to go. I was looking at both Optoma and Epson at the time and went with the Epson for the 3LCD (over DLP) and lens shift (over the usually poor keystone correction). Panasonic also have some highly rated projects, so take a look at them as well.

I have a 3m x 1.69m manual roll down screen. It's not too much of a pain as it gives me something to do while the lamp warms up :)

I have an optoma Hd25e full HD 3D projector, this projects onto a 120" Grandview electronic screen which rolls down just in front of my current tv, best of both worlds. Let me put it this way once you watch sport or movies on this you will never go back to even a 65 inch tv. I have a full surround sound and it is perfect. As for the globe I have had it for almost a year now and I have about 500 hours on it and it is said to be able to do about 4500 hours so on my usage that 7 to 8 years, by then there will probably be UHD projectors. The setup was not that expensive, so I say go for it.

I have the same setup with an amp, some speakers and roof mounted projector. I need to fork out for a screen at some point but my experience is awesome as is.
