Hey guys

I am either going to buy a Samsung 42" LED TV or a projector with my ebucks.

I don't know much about projectors but I was looking at this one:

http://www.kalahari.com/Electronics/Acer-P1273-Projector_p_48039749

I am buying with my ebucks so I can only buy from one of the following stores:

Takealot
Kalahari
Incredible Corruption
Makro

I am looking to spend around R8000.

It is almost only for gaming (going to get it for the PS4) and I usually only play at night (so lighting is not an issue).

Please help with any suggestions and advice.

Thanks

X

Makro occasionally has rocking specials, so if you've got patience then maybe thats worthwhile.

Thats a 1024 x 768 projector so rather go with the samsung TV.

Depends what you enjoy, that projector has a native resolution of 1024 X 768 as pointed out by Havoc, so any higher resolution will just be scaled down to fit that, the screen is probably Full HD around that price range, so its picture quality will be MUCH better

Size = Projector
Quality = TV

IIRC you can get some Full HD projectors for around R9-10k, they just entry level for the res though

I had a projector before. Get the LED.

Projector needs a surface to project on, isn't as bright or high res, often loud (cooling fan) and the bulb replacement cost is expensive (limited lifespan measured in hours).

I'm struggling to find decently priced Full HD projectors at the above mentioned stores.

I don't mind waiting. I'm only panning to get the PS4 with the FIFA 15 bundle anyway.

Makro has a Samsung 55" LED TV on special for R9,999.

Think it was an online store, can't remember it's name though... Could have even been used models in which case walk away

Where do you plan to use the projector, if you get one? Unless it's inside in an easily-darkened room, don't bother. Rather get the flat screen.

I had a 10 000 lumens HD projector on a covered stoep, with a decent pro screen. It wasn't watchable until late dusk. Eventually replaced it with a large flat screen TV.

We could have ended this whole thread by the second post.

I'll say it again...

Get the SCREEN

/close thread im so serial you guys do it!

Everyone that got burned wants to share ... ;)

I have a 2500 lumens projector and watch it fine with curtains open and/or all the down lights on. Full HD and cost around R12k.
Previous one was a 2500 lumens 720p. Cost about about R7k.
Throws a 120" 16:9 image on a dedicated screen built into the wall.

Got a 42" LG in the bedroom and a 47" Sammy in the lounge. While the picture may be brighter, they don't come close to the experience we get watching a movie or jamming XBox on the projector.

Things to consider:

1. Screen size --> Projectors can go bigger than 42", but do you have the distance in your room to do so.
2. Screen resolution --> HD is generally better, unless you get the HD projector
3. Screen --> Projectors project against a screen, which is another purchase. TV is the screen.
4. Luminescence and brightness --> I had EPSON explain it to me once, but it was a couple of years ago. Luminescence is the important part, not the brightness.
5. Running costs. --> Projectors bulb costs are crazy.
6. Connections --> Not all projectors have HDMI.

I have the Samsung 42" and a 1024x768 projector, both about the same age. The TV is great for movies, daylight watching, and generally provides a better colour rendition than the projector. Projector is great for setting up a gaming console like a Wii for gaming (we have done this in an Auditorium once) and for....presentations.

I can save you some time from the projector side of things (if this question is still valid and you're considering one):

Not much of a projector person myself but about 3 months ago I got bit by the projector bug since I'm busy redoing my entire living room and wanted something that's much larger than the usual 55" TV's you get in the R10K price range (and I despise the extra money you're almost forced to pay these days for "SMART" TV's when all I actually want is the looks and panel quality found on SMART TV's... good luck finding that)

Anyway so without a doubt the best projector you can currently buy when you're on a tight budget is this one:
ViewSonic PJD7820HD Full HD 1080P Native with HDMI, 120Hz Active-3D Projector
http://www.wootware.co.za/viewsonic...ga-composite-and-s-video-black-projector.html

I'm not sure if some other competitor has yet released something competitive for the price/performance you get, but I doubt it.

I know R10K is a bit above your budget but I'd rather save up the difference, IF you're going to want to use this thing for web browsing etc. as well. Also, for once the lumen specs on this thing isn't just pulled out of some marketing person's arse, in fact, it actually surpasses the lumen ratings in real-world testing.

Gaming on this projector is pure pleasure. Latency is extremely low (from what I've researched it sometimes surpasses CRT latency even). It's not a cinematic projector in the true sense which means you'll get unnatural colours etc. if you don't town down the brightness a bit on the movie side of things... luckily I'm not a videophile with my finger up my arse so this doesn't matter and I can't even notice any issues after doing some basic calibration... the higher contrast means games look awesome and I was surprised to find out just how much more enjoyable dark games (Splinter Cell, Metro, Dead Space) are with something like this... probably because of the lower blacks etc.

I don't even have it projected against a screen yet, just a relatively freshly painted darker grey wall so I'm excited to see what difference a screen would make. People who are more used to projectors will probably go on-and-on about how incredibly bright it is... for someone like me though who doesn't really like projectors the brightness is just good enough.

It's still visible enough even with direct sunlight streaming into the room (though you wouldn't want to game that way, unless it's something like Mortal Kombat or other less intense 3D games).

That ViewSonic looks like a great projector. Much better bang for you buck than that schitty XGA Epson. Surprised by the price considering the specs - glad to see the price of projectors coming down nicely...

Indeed. The specs on this particular projector is actually what swayed me from just looking for a cheap little thing I can use to play around with Kinect+projector type touchreen applications for my XBMC Music library to full-on "Must. HAVE. PROJECTOR. NOW." Mode.

This is actually just a business projector but the specs-for-price ratio is so good that many hardcore projector sites are listing and reviewing it. I literally spent days and days crawling the net, reading reviews etc. etc. so hopefully this will save someone else some time if this fits their budget and expectations.

As for cheaper prices, importing etc.
I almost imported mine from Amazon since they had a really good special on it a while back (600-ish Dollars), however, I ended up canceling my overseas order since the hassle of getting it here and the wonderful unknowns we have to deal with relating to import taxes etc. just made me realize I'd probably save a few hundred bucks at most, if I was lucky (and projector screens and brackets seem to be cheaper locally anyway, so bundling them all together could actually nail you more than helping you save)

The Wootware price is excellent compared to other local suppliers. They definitely picked up on the awesome price/spec ratio and decided to keep one in stock locally (which I bougght :)) so kudo's to them for that.

EDIT: Random branfart for anyone buying this or stumbling across this thread...

If you live in the Highveld/Gauteng etc. make sure to enable "High Altitude Mode" and set it to not shut down immediately after use.... The only real hardware issues I could find seem to point to overheating issues over the long run causing the reflective material in the light-tunnel to peel off... Changing the settings and being careful overall should reduce the risk of ending up with a POS.
