Proposed Name Changes in CAPE TOWN

Isn't there a Beyers Naude drive in jhb?
and why does he get to have two roads?
I want a road named after me!

// All seems good, who cares what the name of a road is as long as its driveable

I agree totally...
I don't mind driving on Hendrik Verwoed Dr as long as it flowing. I hate traffic jams:eek:

How many Nelson Mandela Dr's do we currently have...? There must one or more for each town...:D

Maybe we should change the name of South africa to Mandela too ?

Err... no, that would be: 'Azania'.

Personally I like some of the proposed names, cant see any hassle with changing them ...a long as govt. has delivered on all its promises to the people (housing; education; runing water - those old chestnuts) otherwise its yet another case of the icing without the cake.

Ok 1 quick question:

Is "Castle drive" the street the castle is in ?
If so what good will it do changing it ?

I would know where to find the castle by looking for that street. Not some suicide bomber's name

Perhaps it would be of interest to peruse George Orwell's "Animal Farm". The ANC is slowly erasing white history. heritage and anything else that reminds them of a time when the ANC were not in control.
I use the word "control" with trepidation.

Coen Steytler Avenue (Cape Town) >> Walter Sisulu Avenue Walter Sisulu was sentenced to life imprisonment during the Rivonia treason trial. He was released in October 1989 and died in May 2003.

Why should Coen Steytler take a back seat, obviously he had something to do with the area also. Rename new streets, taking streets named/made by the previous government is telling me that ANC people are getting 2nd hand opportunities and can not build the same infrastructure the previous government did. Stop building on the previous government's accomplishments unless credit is given where due, which obviously will not happen. Arrogant assholes.

I don't agree with renaming the Jan Smuts names - Jan Smuts was one of South Africa's most prominent politicians ever.

That's why Jan Smuts house in Irene is a national heritage site.

Sshhh... they'll hear you and change that too. First the roads, then the houses, maybe take down some statues, maybe publish some "revised" history books...

I'm all for renaming some streets but wouldn't like to be the company who has to finance redoing their letterheads, business cards, websites, advertising boards, and whatever else I've forgotten.

I had hoped for a wider pool of new names, not just politicians. Taliep Petersen is the only muso - how about heroes of the arts !

Johnny Clegg St
Makeba Drive
Bill Flynn Avenue
Steve Hofmeyr Highway ( just kidding )

The one that gives me pain is Gert Van Rooyen Drive - I know it's not the paedophile but still...

I wonder if they are going to take the idea of my area Durbanville. Apparently some English folk objected to their piece of tar being called a straat, and some Afrikaans folk objected to living in a road.

The solution ? They painted out every road, street, pad, straat, weg, singel, avenue etc so now people live in Hyacinth, Suikerbossie, and the main road which used to be..... Main Rd, is now just Main.

As Jack said - " Why can't we all just.... get along ! "

It seems to continue the ANC theme of exerting dominance over other races/cultures, including what they perceive to be 'their' roads.

There were a lot of writers/poets.

Haha I never knew that happened in Durbanville, what a waste of time.
