I just thought I'd give credit where credit is due see I usually come on here to have a whine. I recently purchased a .com domain and was waiting patiently for the name to propagate. 72 hours later nothing appeared and I contact the DomainCheap support e-mail. Within minutes, on a Sunday, I received a reply that the phone number I had used was in an incorrect format and that the domain registration was rejected.

DomainCheap resubmitted the registration with the correct details and gave my account a credit for the mistake. DomainCheap - thank you very much for the excellent service. I'll be coming back for my future domains too.

Cheers.

Why are they awesome? Their system should have reported this in the first place. Waiting 72 hours with the possibility of someone registering your domain before you can, can be devastating.

I agree - perhaps that is why I received the credit. Realistically though i should have known something was up when the whois wasn't updated in a few hours.

Almost every ISP’s in SA uses an International ICANN accredited Registrar to register the international TLD’s including Domain Cheap, the issue could have come with the international registrars module not formatting the SA telephone numbers correctly hence the registration did not go through.
Telephone number validation is more difficult as our Telkom numbers and cell number are generally typed differently unless you use the international format and most people don’t use +27 11 or +27 82

Thank you for the kind words hambone but AcidRazor is absolutely correct. You should have been notified right away when the registration failed. Unfortunely due to human error on our side, we did not notify you quickly enough, which is why we offered you a free domain. We know we let you down. .COMs (well actually all registrations) should be instant.

What Wayne from domains.co.za says is correct. Different domains require the format of the telephone number in many different formats and this make developing for all the different domains sometimes difficult. There are bugs our developers are working at resolving.

We did learn from this error and have put in additional safeguards since.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I know that we built in quite a few safeguards for International TLD’s in our WHMCS Registrar module to try and prevent these type of errors creeping but every now and again we do spot something strange and have to make some adjustments.
