SA rallies behind Proteas

Durban - South Africans did it for Bafana Bafana, now the country is being urged to wear cricket jerseys on Fridays in support of the Proteas leading up to the ICC World Cup in February.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday welcomed an initiative by Lead SA, encouraging the South African public to show their 100 percent support for the Proteas.

Lead SA is a Primedia Broadcasting initiative which aims to encourage South Africans to become more proactive about the progress of the country.

The launch of the Cricket Friday initiative comes a day before a five-match One Day International series between the Proteas and India.

The first match takes place at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead in Durban on Wednesday.

"CSA supports any initiative that is 100 percent behind the Proteas! We congratulate Lead SA on backing our boys," said Cricket South Africa CEO, Gerald Majola.

Yusuf Abramjee, Primedia Group's Head of News and Current Affairs, said: "Lead SA is getting behind all national sports. We supported Bafana Bafana ahead of the World Cup and created much excitement. We also arranged the very successful parade through the streets of Sandton two days before kick-off. It was the biggest show of support for any sport in the history of SA."

"We have engaged the Minister of Sport, Fikile Mbalula, who is 100 percent behind it. On Monday, he publically endorsed it and called on South Africans to get their shirts out," said Abramjee.

The Football Friday initiative did prove to be effective. It united the country and added to the excitement of the FIFA World Cup.

"We have decided to get fully behind the Proteas and mobilise the public because we believe our cricketers need the support ahead and during the Cricket World Cup. We are encouraging our listeners and readers via Lead SA to wear their cricket shirts every Friday. We have declared Fridays Pure Protea Fridays," added Abramjee. - BuaNews

I would guess I could get a shirt from most decent retail sport shops. I would like to get an authentic shirt (and so that rules out anything from William Nichol in Fourways :p). So what could I expect to pay for a shirt?

About R170. http://shop.cricket.co.za/

Good luck. That site is farked beyond belief, and I just managed to get my order through after almost 3 hours of trying.

Dumbasses want us to rally behind our team, but can't run a decent site to sell the merchandise.

Thanks, fellas. Will give the site a swing. @ R 170 it's not likely to last long... unless they're using a sweat shop in Swaziland for their wares :p

I hope that there are still loud and proud Proteas supporters if they get knocked out of the first round of the competition.

Good luck with that usually the retail stores only carry the rugby and football shirts. At least that's the case here at menlyn and brookly, only the small sport replica store at menlyn ever carries cricket shirts.

I can guarantee that I'll be extremely grumpy... but my allegiance will remain. No point in being a supporter if I can't get vociferous in my support :D

true true.... an angry supporter is still a supporter....

i have a feeling about this one, taking a bunch of youngsters and not "seasoned" pro's, we might have 2 decent spinners by the time we get there, our top order [Smith, Amla, Kallis, AB] is quite comfortable against spin... and botha/tahir/[potentially Faf] is some decent spin bowling.

Most of the guys will have been to a WC before and many should be at the top of their game. Add a few new faces who are achieving great success locally... it all adds up to a real chance of going further than round 1.

Lol if the Proteas win, it will only be because of their Paki bowler :p

It matters not.

He chose to adopt SA as his country. And if he gets into the final squad off to the WC, good for him. He's definitely taken enough scalps in domestic cricket.

No different to England with Strauss, Pietersen and Trott... and they took the most coveted trophy in test cricket ;)

You forgot prior.:D I don't mind tahir at all, he brings a valuable skill to the side that none of the SA born players seem to have. So its only right to pick him.
