I need to rip a protected DVD movie, any advice on what software to use.

I recall there being a small utility that operates between the drive and the actual ripping software but cannot remember the name of it.

Edit: DVD Decrypter does not work.

Got DVDfab installed but it has expired.

/goes and checks nzbmatrix

I use SlyFox AnyDVD and DVD Shrink... and have had no problems with protected content with these.

+1 dvdfab.
pretty sure you don't need to pay for it.
maybe i've just got an old version.

On Windows DVDfab to rip it to hard drive and then Handbrake to convert to file. Otherwise use a Linux PC which will just ignore the DRM on the disc and go straight to running Handbrake.

It cannot handle some of the newer protected discs.

K see did not know that. Last used it back in 2007 I think.

On Linux I always use Handbreak but don't know how or even if, it will work on Windows.

Not DVD Shrink... but AnyDVD Shrink. 2 different rippers. Any DVD Shrink has not failed me yet... just does the job.

I use handbrake for a bunch of other stuff.. never tried ripping though. I don't think it will handle copyright protection very well.
You will really be hard pressed to find anything that's better than AnyDVD, especially the fact that you can useit in conjunction with whatever else. Mind you, can rip straight from it too, btw...

The latest version is 3.2.0.15 that was updated in 2005... between them and DVD Decrypter they massive battles with certain companies!
