Been a very busy two days going from police to courts and all.

So suppose your ex father-in-law is making threats against you, and you want a protection order against him, how will it work? Said ex father-in-law stays with your kid (ex-wife and child moved back in with her father).

Complicated because your child is living there.

He is probably just trying to protect the daughter like a dad should. Make audio recordings of threats just in case.

Can't you just open a case of intimidation than a protection order which the police appear not to bother enforcing anyway.?

Do I need to have actual evidence of he threats to apply for a protection order?

I will go back again, though the police and court didn't seem to care.

Try to have as much supportive evidence as possible although you may apply for an interim order on the basis of an application under oath.

Note you MUST apply for an order ito the Protection from Harassment Act 17 of 2011 and NOT the Domestic Violence Act (which would not apply in your instance)
