I have a fibre line and a mobile router as a failover.

  • I have been using an Afrihost SIM in the mobile router; the issue, though, is that every 90 days, you need to buy voice data from MTN to stop the number from being recycled. (It's actually in the T&C's). I keep on forgetting, and keep on having to get a new SIM.

Who is the best provider to use in this situation (contract or prepaid doesn't matter), all I need:
  • The SIM number doesn't get recycled if there is no activity for 90 days.
  • 500mb to a Gb a month to just have in case failover is activated. (I get an alert).
  • Cost effective top-ups for when the main line is down and I need to continue using mobile.

Hello.

If you get the SIM card from us and it is not an opt-in SIM, it should not be disconnected from the network. We load a certain amount of airtime within 80 days to ensure activity on the SIM card.

What do you mean by Opt-in sim?
This is my 4th MTN card registered with Afrihost that has been disconnected. It would have been nice to know.

Optin sim is you buy from eg Checkers and register the sim with AH to use AH's data instead of MTN's.

For a reliable fail over without the hassle, consider Vodacom's prepaid SIMs they don't recycle inactive numbers as quickly and offer affordable top-ups.

CellC Home Connecta Flexi. LTE only.

Prepaid. Rollover is free indefinitely. You can do it on the CellC App on your phone.
