Provinces reject fuel levy for e-tolls: report

Now it suits them to listen to concerns about E-Toll's but before they just basically went ahead.

Agreed. And also charge residents of other provinces extra to use our roads and airports

Yup, any vehicle that has outstanding bills with a non gp plate should be billed directly to the province in question

And charge them extra for every call center operator, banker, broker they call or trade they make on the JSE or by service they take for granted.
 
This is so dumb, as a Cape Town resident I have no problem with the fuel levy. People forget they are coming here next...

Same with me in PE, but the fuel levy must be ring fenced so that the ANC cannot plunder it for purposes other than road maintenance.
 
I think you guys are missing the point here. It's not the people of other provinces arguing against this... it's the ministers. I for one am from Cape Town, and am in favour of the fuel levy to fund road infrastructure upgrades (although I would have hoped that the current levy would have been good enough).

Those in charge seem to be missing the point of letting people decide. If they had to actually poll the people, they would find many / most in favour of fuel levies instead of e-tolls. How often do we see a 20 - 50c increase in the fuel price due to external influence, and we don't event bat an eyelid anymore.

People in other provinces need to realise that e-tolls are heading their way soon unless we put a stop to this. E.g. here in CT, we have planned tolling on the N1, from just after the R300 turnoff. I can't think of a better idea to negatively impact the farming industry... not to mention the effects on weekend winelands tourism and logistics and transport from up-country.

Either way, there's no use hating on the people from other provinces, as you will find them in favour of the fuel levy in spite of the ministers. Articles like this are a sure fire way to introduce divisions in the public, thereby isolating provinces and bolstering support for e-tolls from those outside of Gauteng.

I'm surprised people are responding here with knee-jerk reactions.
 
Oh, so the fuel levy in place of e-tolls? I misunderstood the thing a bit then.

Also not sure why the GP people feel the need to attack everyone from other provinces.

It's the other provinces "I don't give a sh|t about GP" approach that is the problem.

E-tolls affects everyone in SA - not just those in GP. The rest of the provinces are to daft to see that.

The fuel levie is already in place for the purpose of funding for our road infrastructure. Why should other provinces fit the bill for joburgs new roads. We fought to have the etrolls scrapped for the same reason the fuel Levi is used to fund for the roads. We somehow contradicting ourselves by now going this route. This is all so retarted and makes no sense at all.

Those nice new shiny JHB roads are helping the rest of the country... not just JHB.

It actually makes loads of sense. Factor in that the levy has already been squandered. The money IS going to come from somewhere. It has to. You can't just print it.

So now do you implement an incredibly expensive and inefficient system (which will be ignored anyhow) that will push up the costs of transport in the economic hub of the country? Or do you accept the fact that we as a country are all reliant on each other, and spread the load? Using a fuel levy ensures that everyone pays, and no one can decide not to pay (this reduces the costs for everyone).

Who do you think pays for the roads around the rest of the country? Yup... it's the economic hub of the country. There just isn't enough money being generated in outlying areas to pay for their own roads.

So we already have a flow of tax money out of Gauteng. The region effectively subsidizes a large portion of the country. This is how a country works. To not spread the burden is immensely stupid from an economic point of view.

Not to mention that the scourge that is e-tolling will affect the rest of us soon (yup, it's coming to our lovely CT as well buddy).

There is no contradiction here. This is exactly what we have been asking for all along!

EDIT: Not to mention, being where the most cars and people are, Gauteng will still be paying a larger portion of costs via the fuel levy.
