Proxy: P3 850MHz or Celeron 1.2GHz?

Title says it all. Currently I have the P3 set up as a WinXP proxy server, but I just received a celery 1.2GHz and I dunno which would work better. Any advice? Both would be the same system, just with different processors.

It's not doing much calculating of anything so wouldn't the higher clock speed be better?

And if you rephrase that argument it would come out something like: use a slower clock speed for doing more calculating.

P3 850 most definitly. I remember seeing benchmarks of the early Pentium IV 1.5Ghz processors being slower that 933 P3 boxes in almost everything. No a problem if you had a Athlon XP 1500. Then you just kicked ass.

Yeah... the extra features of the P3 means it would outperform the Celeron on certain tasks. I'm questioning if this is one of them or not?

All depends WHICH celeron... AND which P3, for that matter...

Guys it is a proxy server. I don't actually think it needs all the advanced functions from the CPU.

i use p3 500MHz for proxies like ipcop and runs perfectly no hassles

The celeron might be slightly better if its p3 architect...but i would go for the P3.
Lower clock means less power draw and less heat, something to consider for a proxy server running all day.
And they're probably on par in performance...
