Can the hardware experts here help me through my dilemma?
I'm looking to buy a console to play FPS games on a 42" HD plasma.
My Scottish blood says I shouldn't be blowing big cash on this, so:
- do I buy a PS2 - (what are graphics like though?), OR
- buy an Xbox arcade, which will probably die of RRoD within a year?
Any thoughts?

uhm ..... how to answer without resorting to giving you a klap on der head :D ..... xbox360 is next-gen and the ps2 isn't. RRoD is not ver common with the newer units ala Arcade, so get the Arcade :D

You just asked me to help you choose between a glass of water and a million Rand

PS2 is old news, last-generation gaming at its finest.

Xbox 360 Arcade me matey ... R1999 well spent ;)

May I ask what brand HD plasma you have? And how long have you had it? That burn-in period is crucial before you start to do gaming on it.

p.s. RROD won't be a real issue from the Arcade generation consoles going forward. In any case swop-outs are quite easy to do ... or send it to me to repair it ;)

Lol, 2 different gen consoles, get the Xbox arcade, the ps2 will look k@k compared to the 360 on ur nice big tv!!
U are comparing the two cheapest things on the market, i would recommend you maybe take a look at the entire next gen range and make sure you making the right decision. PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 are the contenders, I know what I bought and I am loving my PS3, but Xbox is also awesome.
Seeing that u had the PS2 on the cards that tells us ur budget isnt the greatest. I would say go for the Xbox, but get the premium, having a hard drive is awesome, o and you dont want to be sitting at your 42" bound by cables, once you go wireless you rethink how lame it is sitting being constrained by a cable!

Lets look at this in parts. :D

1.There is no dilemma really.
2.Have you been hiding in the Scottish Higlands for the last 2 years to have not see the following FPS games on the 360? :D
- Bioshock
- Halo 3
- COD4 etc.
3.If you have a 42" HD plasma, money should not be a worry. ;)
4.The graphx on the PS2 is not going to be HD and it is a past gen system.
5.The 360 is will be HD.
6. If you are still thinking that the 360 will die in a year from RROD then you should rather buy a PS2.

LOL!

But seriously now!
The 360 will be a good buy for you for FPS games, do some reading on the net on some of the games I mentioned above and decide from that.
Also have a look at upcoming games for the 360 and decide if those are type of titles that you are looking at playing.
The Arcade version is fine for gaming, the HDD is only required for online gaming.

The RROD has been sorted out completely and all new modes the Arcade included is now HDMI and has additional heat-sinks attached to keep the 360 nice and cool! The excange for MS are some of the best int he world and if you buy it through CNA it is even better.

The Arcade is perfect for gaming offline as the memory card that you get with the console is more than sufficient for saves as they are tiny!!!

Fantastic !
The question has been answered and Xbox Arcade it is.
Maestro - its an LG plasma about 8 months old - burnt in?
Thanks folks

Absolutely no question mate, the 360. The PS2 will look absolutely k@k on a big screen like that, and there are no new games coming out for it.

One thing : If you want to run in HD (which you do!) the Arcade doesn't ship with an HD cable, so you need to get one. The official component and VGA ones are about R300, you can get others for about R180. You can also use any cheap generic HDMI cable, but getting 5.1 audio out becomes, well, interesting.

As for RRoD - The Arcade came out long after Microsoft discovered the problem, so all Arcades are pretty much immune. (Any unit with HDMI is basically safe)

If you would like to go online with it, and you can push the budget I'd suggest looking into getting the Pro - it comes with the HD cable in the box, and the Hard drive with is great for downloading game demo's, map packs, and the new larger Arcade Games. You could defer some of the money you would spend on games on a pro, as there are a lot top notch Classics out already to get you started - Gears of War, Crackdown, PGR etc etc

Just a thought, either 360 is a winner ;)

Get a HDD definately, Live is the big plus of the 360. An awesome system :D

If your Plasma is 8 months old then it has "acclimatised". Plug in that 360 and have a jol ...
