PS2 repair - is it worth it?

So I had my PS2 repaired a few times, the company that did it, claimed that they changed the laser, but from what I gather, all they did was clean it and adjust it - now it wont read discs anymore - I did take it somewhere in Edenvale and was quoted around R700 odd to change the laser.
I have been fiddling with it, all sorts of advice on google, and it almost worked, but it looks like the laser is now finished.
I don't really want to pay R700 to have it repaired, so I could either just buy a second hand one for around R800 or get the laser from ebay for about R300 and install it myself.
So what would you do? I would like to have it working because I have a collection of about 30 games and the kiddies love the dance mat game which is not available on Xbox.

A laser for a PS2 is R250 minus shipping (bid or buy). You were ripped off by being charged R700.

When I had my PS2 last year, my motherboard went. It was picked up, serviced and dropped off for R500. A laser replacement is not difficult and is DIY. I don't service PS2's per say, buy if you buy the laser I can install it for R100 labour.

No need to be ripped off man :D

Just as a point of order - DDR is available on the 360, and Singstar-ish LIPS will be soon as well.

But by all means replace your PS2: you can't upgrade to a PS3 because the local ones are not backwards compatible.
 
I've got a Black PS2 that I've never used in original box etc (Got it on a cellphone contract) if you're wanting to buy a new one.
 
has it been chipped? Are you sure its the laser - does it read cd's/psx games/dvd's/ps2 games? I've repaired quite a few of them and if you look after it your laser should last a good few years. Its about 400-500 for a new laser plus installation. Any cheaper and you might get a refurbished laser. They're pretty easy to install just make 100% sure you get the correct laser model.

How many times has the laser been replaced?

The earlier ps2 models had major laser problems - v10's. If you have one of these and don't have the laser fix then if your laser dies it could take out a few components on your mobo as well.
 
I was thinking about sayin that you should sell the ps2 and get a xbox but after rereading ur post im thinkin that ur not up to shellin out tooo much cash and the ps3 is too expensive and doesnt have BC for ur ps2 titles. personally i think u should take maestro_za up on his offer. He has demonstrated good business ethic and really seems to know his stuff. besides, its seems like the cheapest alternative as well

I have an xbox it just I have a lot of games for the ps2 and the dance mats and whatnot, so its a pity to chuck them all out, I wasn't aware though that DDR was available for xbox - must look at that option as well.

As I said I almost got the PS2 to work, it went from NO DATA to PS2 disc, and even went as far as loading the Playstation logo and then died.....maybe I'll fiddle some more

To maestro, those R250 lasers on bob are for the slimline, I have an older version, but if I decide to get a laser from ebay I will probably contact you to fit it, thanks!

PS3, pooey, silly to get one of those, they dont have gears, enuff said on that subject.

Would you know if the USA Xbox DDR works on our consoles - so many games do even if they say NTSC, I may just take a chance - if I can get DDR for xbox then I'm taking the ps2 and all the games to the shooting range....

true about loosing all those titles...whats a ps2 going for these days? i havent looked for one in ages!! i remember buyin my first ps2 during my internship! lol, i took a taxi to cash crusaders in berea and bot it 2nd hand with a bag and 2 controls for R1800!! thot i made the deal of the year :D anyways got a lot of man-sized hours out of that already beaten beast!! worst cash investment but best entertainment decision i ever made!!
 
the lasers for the fatties are more expensive. if you know what your doing you could try opening in and clean the laser. there's also one or two alignment wheels (depending on the model no) that you can also try and adjust. but if you don't know what your doing don't try it - you might only make things worse.

way past that stage dude, as I said almost got it to work, been playing with the wheel going around and around, almost worked, but almost not good enuff!!!.
so whats a fair offer on a PS2 if I were to get one?

Dilemma now is if to try and repair this one, get a new second hand or chuck the lot and just get DDR for xbox?
 
New one's haven't really dropped much in price. Think they around 1500

You can also take it in for repair at the official ps repair guys. The company is ICSS (or is it ICCS) - it its no longer under warranty they will repair it/give you a refurbished unit for R500 (If I remember correctly)


Give them a call and check what they charge now. You can take any ps2 to them as long as its got all its pieces. I once took a ps2 in which had a hole in the mobo and they swapped it out for 500 odd.

No problem dude. At the end of the day, you need a working PS2. I hope you come right!

Oh, but we all know which console is! :D

This from all the naysayers three years ago: the XBox 360 won't be backward compatible, but its going to be a selling point for the PS3 because the PS3 will be!

Lol, thats one the the PS3 fanboi's never bring up. Especially in light of the fact that my XBox power source died - I can still play all my games on my 360! Woohoo! Try Bluray your way out of that! ;)

guess that aint an issue for me cos my ps3 is BC; software emulation but it does the job :D I bought rogue galaxy a while ago and it plays like a charm; luckily all my ps2 titles do.

Yea that sucks ... what about those 80GB or whichever new version they launched - also not backward compatible?

I think they have categorically stated that no future PS3s will be backward compatible. With the XBox 360 it is an update away!

Couldn't afford the money to research backward compatibility and add to the PS3 costs. From what I hear its only the PS2 thats making money. You'd think, in a world where PS2 owners out number PS3 owners almost 9:1 you'd consider backward compatibility. The 360 doesn't reach any where near these numbers, but its not a stumbling block... :/
