Im new to this console gaming thing. Im looking at getting a console for the home (me and the 5 year old). I dont need a Blu Ray player, already have one of those, and I dont need to network or play games over the internet.

The PS2 looks like an attractive offer, cheap console, lots of cheap games....

Why not?

don't look at me , i didn't say anything.jokes aside its a good option .

except that its outdated, there no other reason if you want one go out and get it, we all will just give you the whole next gen xbox 360 / ps3 speech.

Considering you got a 5yo the wii is much better buy

If you are happy with not being able to get the latest games and tech (like kinect and move) then go for it.

How much are they going for now? BTW I read somewhere here that the Wii is down to R1600 for a bundle.

It's 11 year old hardware. If you're playing on a non LCD/Plasma TV then perhaps...

Go for it
If you go for anything else, you might become a "game-kop" especially because you new to this.

That won't be good as you DO have a son to look after.
The games are also much cheaper.

My advice is to start with maybe 1 or 2 games at first.
Monitor your behaviour especially the relationships you have with your family.

Believe me , the second us guys own our first gaming machine, WE CHANGE FOREVER!

PS2 going for R1099 at Game this week.
And new games I can buy for anywhere between R80 to R150.

Please, please dont get a PS2...just get an xbox or ps3.

I have an xbox and the last time i saw a PS2 I almost threw up at the siff graphics. Its not that much more for an xbox arcade or something.

I'm the only person who is recommending the wii considering a 5year old has very little controller skills the wii is the best option

Big issue is availability of games. PS2 still has the best games for little ones but its a mission to get them. My PS2 is just lying the cupboard as the only game little geek can play is Need For Speed 2.

Oh, but if you have any Singstar fans in the house, then its worth it. My daughter loves Singstar and its the only reason why I still have my PS2 (she live with her mom) is its a backup for her. Also PS2 Singstar games work on a PS3

Rather get a Wii.

or kinect my 5 year old can navigate the kinect all by herslf, not so much the wii

He is looking for something cheap. The kinect alone, without a 360, is more expensive than the Wii.
