Whilst watching DVD's on the PS3 using Sony 5.1 surround the speech/dialogue volume seems low to me, to a point where I have to adjust the volume during periods of dialogue and then adjust it again during action/explosion scenes. Its really annoying and I'm sure the neighbours wonder if WW3 has started at times.
Are there any settings that need to be adjusted on the PS3 for this? I've fiddled with the settings on the sound system but all that seems to help a little is if I turn the bass down low.

Is there no way to adjust the volume of each speaker on the reciever individually? What reciever model do you have?

The centre speaker controls voice on 5.1 setups. As Fudzy mentioned, adjust the individual speaker levels on your Sony amplifier.
Otherwise your next best best option is to tell your amplifier to output only 2.1. To get the full 5.1 effect, you need to have loud volume(well thats my opinion). For lower volumes, 2.1 will work better for you as all the channels are output over left and right and have similar levels.

Thanx for the quick response guys
If I remember correctly there is a way to adjust speaker volume levels individually. Ill go check a lunchtime.
Once again, buy a donkey

Look for settings relating to dolby (audio) compression. If the compression is set off, then you'll hear the soundtrack as it is in the theater... loud explosions, seemingly soft dialog. If you set compression to maximum, it reduces the sometimes vast levels between speech and effects. Note this only affects Dolby soundtracks. It doesn't do dink for DTS.

Hey guys the centre speaker adjustment did the trick, now i can watch dvd's with the sub woofer set at max and still hear the dialogue clearly.
I could'nt find the audio compression settings though.
Now if I could only get a Sony receiver that gives me HDMI audio as well. Any thoughts?
