A look at some cool new features of the soon to be released 3.0 Firmware.

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.

Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:

* “What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon, “What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
* Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
* Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
* PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
* Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
* Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

Yeah, that's a shame. I have a feeling that they would sell more PS3's if it was able to play the PS2 games.

I used to think that, now I'm not so sure.
I paid extra for the 60gig ps3 so I could play ps2 games.. its been a year and how many ps2 games have I played...?
well... none.
Not that I didn't have any ps2 games I had plenty. (not now, I sold them a month or two ago with my ps2).

The fact is when it comes down to my choice of playing something new in hd or something... old and not in hd, I always seem to choose the newer game.

If I had managed to keep SSX Tricky tho (lost it in a poker game, no seriously, I had a straight, he had a flush.. sux :( ) I would probly still be playing it.

I got a ps2 as a separate console and after playing it on my HDTV, I never played it again. The PS3 does not upscale PS2 games on the 60GB either. Also most games are not made for Wide screen which makes it worse.

That's true, the HD would be the deciding vote for me, though I never owned a PS2, and I am itching to play the previous God Of War games before playing GoW3, I was addicted to the GoW game on the PSP.

And lol @ losing the game in poker. That was tres bad luck mate.

I actually still have GoW2. Still going to play it sometime.. probly not tho.

I wonder if they will improve the media center. If you group by artist, it lists all the artists. When you go into an artist you see all the songs and not the album, very irritating. Also, you cannot shuffle songs folder, artist or genre.

Yeah I fully agree with that. Would have been nice for a more, dare I say it, Windows Media Center feel to it.

Any news yet on when this is coming out?

Im thinking of buying the PS3 Slim. Im wanting to get a Blu ray player (which are about the same price) and i could sell the "killing two birds with one stone" line to my wife.
The problem is there is no variety of bluray discs available yet.
I was in the US last year and all their new releases on the shelf are both in DVD and Bluray, as well as any older titles. I would probably end up getting my BR discs from the US.

My question behind all this blah blah is this:

Are PS3/Slims "region free" for both BR and DVD?
And do they have an "upscale" feature(improves the pic quality of normal DVDs)?

reason I ask this question here is that the region issue is software one..

Are PS3/Slims "region free" for both BR and DVD? Unfortunately not. You are going to have to get BD discs from the same region as your PS3. Games on the other hand are region free
And do they have an "upscale" feature(improves the pic quality of normal DVDs)? Yes they do

:)

And i assume theres no way around it...? ie some kind of crack?

no, the ps3 has no region hacks, it *might* be possible to install linux and play the discs through vlc - but i can't confirm that.
I have heard that it's possible to rip the blu ray image to hd via linux, and then watch the resulting ripped file, again i haven't tried this.

however, no linux support on ps3 slim.

I stand corrected on this but I think only region1 BR disc's are a problem?

I think we can finally put the BC in a firmware upgrade rumours to rest.

Ars interviews John Koller.

Do we need to stop yapping about backwards compatibility?
"It's not coming back, so let me put that on the table," Koller says with an air of finality. But it's all people ever talk about!

"It's not as big as a purchase intent driver as you may be hearing," he claimed. "We've got such a substantial lineup of titles on the PS3; most people are buying the PS3 for PS3 games. They've buying it for PS3 games and Blu-ray movies."

"That won't be returning," he repeats.
