PS3 in a Death Spiral

It all depends how you see it. MS opens up it's operating system such that tools and apps are relatively easy to develop on which will obviously lead to many loopholes that one cna exploit.

Like Firefox or games :D....

M$ has made it very simple to write games for the Xbox which is what the machine is intended for really. However to stop the bugs that plague windows all games need to go through an intensive certification process which does it's best to get rid of all the bugs and also makes sure there is no dangerous or malicious code inside the game.

If you think they don't really test it properly then take a look at Worms which has taken months to pass the certification test and has been referred back to the developers multiple times.

I personally think this is where the Xbox has the edge over the PS3... I can download an application today to develop a game for the Xbox. Yeah I won't be able to get it into stores or onto XBLA without a lot of work and knowledge but it is an option for me. You try get the PS3 development kit :D

I would not read anything into MS being a 'software' company - they only made second rate software thus far.
Look, no matter what you think of MS, my point was that they are far better at understanding & supporting game developers than Sony is. In this situation it is not important what you or me think (the end user), but rather the developers themselves.

For example look at John Carmack of Id, Mr. OpenGL (I spit on DirectX). Even a die-hard like him has expressed admiration for the X360's environment & architecture.

BTW I'd love to see Apple enter the games console market ... they would probably come with something 'fresh' (like N did with the Wii), however don't think their pockets go deep enough.

Historically Apple did try to release a console, it was called the "Pippin". Remember it? Exactly . . ;)

Apple is 'sort of' competing in a very nefarious way - games on the iPod. I know we all scoff at the thought, but how many iPods are there out there? "Casual Games" are a huge growth market at the moment and they're in a very good position. I think "iTV" was suppossed to support some degree on casual games as well.

Microsofts greatest strength has always been - ease of platform development entry, backwards compatibility and software availability, which is also it's weakness.

Interestingly enough if you've worked with 2003 Server and got into the nuts and bolts, the core of windows is as solids as any other OS, the problem is the openess of the platform - because any tom dick or harry writes drivers that access low level functionality it can cause instability. If you use the proper Enterprise certified applications and drivers, server 2003 performs like a mainframe.

Apple effectively locks down its OS which basically ties a developer's hands when writing software. There's always a tradeoff. As GavinM said, there's a reason why MS monopolises the desktop OS market. they didn't do it because they sold buggy software but software that improves productivity and simplifies certain business and home tasks.
They did it through ruthless business practices.

How is Windows open?

Apple's software improves productivity even more so why is it not the most popular?

Windows opens up the majority of it's low level functionality though API's for developers to use.

Apple does not allow this freedom which is why there is less software for it which is why it is not as popular. Not to mention that Apple not only sells the OS but also the hardware. I can get a copy of Windows to run on virtually any machine that I slap together. However it's not that simple with Apple at all.

If I got an Apple as my next PC I would not be able to run any of my daughters computer games on it. There is just not enough software for it and I don't like being tied into something like that. Apple knows best? Yeah right.

Anyone can develop anything for windows and publish it as they see fit.

Microsoft "everything" has one killer feature: integration. MS office, piece buy piece was totalled beaten by the like of Wordperfect, Quattro Pro and Lotus. Where it won was OLE. Simply that you could embed output from any MS app in any other MS app - history proves that.

Man, though choice, should I hang on to my X360 or sell it and wait for the Pippin 2?

I'm sure Jobs could come out with something a bit better these days ... oh wait he's too busy with the iPhone & ATV.

Jobs is a smart guy, I admire him he's always been that one step ahead. He is the "Apple edge". I reckon theres a fair chance the iPhone will be the DS Lite's biggest competitor in a few years.

Don't make the mistake.
Jobs is just like any other corporate head, they can't be trusted, and they will say anything to save themselves or the company.
Basically to do what is necessary to keep the masses happy and say what they think the people want to hear.

Oh absolutely, he just does it so much better than everyone else :p

But you have to admire a guy that goes from building pc's in his garage, to being fired from his own company to starting a 'little' content company called Pixar, to a Disney director, and in the process redefine: computer user interfaces, media processing, animated entertainment and the digital media distribution industry.

So you a MS lover?

why

Does Jobs deserve the God like following he has? I don't think so personally... He is a showman like Branson and is fantastic at that...

However apart from the iPod Apple hasn't really made any dent in any of the industries they have attempted... Nice Guy but I don't think he is one of the leaders of the tech generation personally.

No, I'm not deifying Jobs at all, he's an exceptionally shrewd and astute businessman with a flare for the dramatic, much like Branson, you're right. I admire both men for their business sense.

Having said that I don't buy Apple, I don't like Apple computers in general (I like two mouse buttons thanks ;) ) There are generally better & cheaper niche products out there.

Jobs is a creative lead in the industry and his awareness of what consumers want is second to none - look at the original Mac, the iMac, the iPod. None were new idea's, but Joe public "got" them with ease. He has single handedly brought Apple back from insolvency 3 times to become a benchmark brand.

@JK8, I don't know where you get that from that post, I'm talking about Apple!

Indeed, must agree with his business-sense. Apple has made a comeback with him being in charge.

rofl @ JK8 :D

Was supposed to quote this.

Just because you can see the value in something doesn't make you a fanboy, just because you criticize something doesn't mean you hate the product.

Microsoft has done a lot wrong, and a lot right. Contrary to what people want to believe, Microsoft got to where they are for leading their field, however you define that, whether it be proprietary formats, product tie in, superior product or better value for money.

I've been around Computers for over 2 and 1/2 decades the last ten off those programming the darn things, and I can say unequivocally that MS provides the best platform to enable me to do my job to the best of my ability, to my benefit and that of my customer. Open Source is great, I use a lot of it actually, it's a fallacy that pro-MS means anti OSS, MS themselves provide a lot of Open software, just not under GPL for good reason.

Have they been evil? Sure. will they again - With Ballmer at the head I'm pretty sure they will. But for now they're still numero Uno.

Drifting somewhat lazily back on topic, th exact same can be said of Sony. They have been market leader, and some of their products are class leading. (Bravia / Vaio / some of their phones) But when they get rude and arrogant based on false claims, that's when I get miffed. And as I said, the exact same goes for MS. I see Steve Ballmer smacktalking Linux, and I think it's in very bad taste.

exactly..compliment something for being great and criticize something for being poor. That's how I do it.

No one likes a monopoly like MS but at the end of the day we use it. I'm say saying we have to use it. There are many other tools around we can find for alternatives. The fact though remains, I've used MacOS, Linux as well but MS Windows and Office has still being the most productive tool. It might come at a price but without it I won't be able to do what my company pays me to. That's mt opinion.
