Hi Guys

I have been reading a lot of news about PS3 USB jailbreaks that enable backing up of games to hard drive and running of 3d party software... See here for example: www.psjailbreak.com

So has anybody out there got their hands on one of these? If so where can it be bought in SA, and does it work?

Thanks any feedback would be great...

Been thinking about getting one of these for a while, has anyone bought from the x360 guy?

If I buy a 250gb xbox360 - latest version from Hifi corp - what would I need to do backup games to the hdd?
Since the jtag exploit would not work anymore - not really interested in xbox live.

If you buy a new XBOX Slim, i think you have to wait for the LT+ patch that is not out yet.

Would like to know about the PS3 JailBreak/mod chip as well - and what kind of options one have...
Basically it seems that you only need a programmable USB dongle and then upload firmware on it (the firmware should however be compiled for the specific microcontroller used).

Thought I would post an update on this. I bought the ps3break mod chip from a guy in Johannesburg for R400. This allows you to boot from this device and it installs a new menu called "install packages" in your games folder. You can then install various home brew packages like Open Manager that will allow you to make backup copies of your games to the console's hdd or an external hdd. (This is extremely useful when you have kids and you would rather play from the backup than leaving a R600 bluray disk lying around) Please note that you have to boot from the device every time for the home brew software to work. I have had zero issues with the device and I would recommend it to anybody.

PS: Piracy is bad... Mkay

These days you can do the same with a custom firmware. No need to pay R400 for a usb dongle.

Jailbreak for PS3: Very good, I sell these myself, just don't have any in stock atm :/

Xbox 360 firmware mod: Easily done if you know what you're doing, I do this myself, R250 for newer Xboxes, R200 for older ones and R50 for update if you have the drive key, R250 if you don't.

The Slim drives still don't have a firmware release, with no ETA.

Heard of a lot of these firmwares bricking consoles.

It is true that Geohot released a method of loading a custom firmwate he has also noted that he has disabled all means of piracy and that backup managers like Openmanager will not work... Probably ****ting himself after Sony sued him

Thanks for the link I must have missed that new developement

Would like to see software for the PS3 that can stream movies over SMB. Currently have a media player in the main lounge and would like the PS3 to view the files. Can't run streaming software on the media player since it is a standalone
