PS3 Marketing Deemed False

This whole console wars is getting old.

They're both great systems with pro's and cons. Get on with gaming instead of badmouthing the opposition.

PS3’s record-breaking debut for a home console comfortably beats the previous top seller Nintendo Wii, which sold 105,000 after its frantic launch weekend in December last year. Fellow format rival Xbox 360 racked up an estimated 70,000 at launch in December 2005.

The figure also means that Sony has not sold all of its opening weekend stock, something the platform holder claims is part of its overall strategy at retail.

ShockG, as far as the ad goes, it was a lie, a very high profile lie that could mislead a misinformed consumer into buying the product under false pretences. Beside it perpetuating inane statements on the boards like half the posts here, which are rubbish. If it took a fanboy to call them on it so be it. If the ASA deems the ad misleading then it means it can negatively impact on consumer, which makes the complaint a valid one. They don't respond to frivolous claims.

I'll draw your attention to the fact that any "anti Sony" stuff posted on the boards are typically article and post links to MSM critique. The most in depth anti 360 stuff the peanut gallery can dig up is "360 sux".

No seriously. It's not surprising in the least it's doing so well in FAH, the architecure of the Cell is designed to do precisely this sort of massively parallel analytical work. Pity it's not how you write games.

What I find very interesting is the GPU scores. Per Unit the GPU's are 4x better at folding than the PS3. (For the uninitiated the GPU scores are for folding running on the ATI X1900 series of cards, which to those who know may seem familiar . . . )
 
Hey I am getting there Fudzy I am just finishing reading up an article on how people want the Xbox 360 to join up to the same Folding project as well....

I was told to investigate my articles more :D...

The sales figures are only popping out this morning as well, I am glad you guys are looking forward to my articles though :p

There is a MUCH bigger xbox360/Nintendo fanboy group out paint themselves as anti-PS3 fanboy. I see very few threads/posts on local forums which have moronic "xbox suxx0rz" in anymore than a humourous jab at the ps3 fanboy mentality. The minute a bit of news regarding the PS3 comes out whether its positive or negative, its blasted by this group I mentioned previously, why dont you just give the console a little time to find its feet eh? Give both consoles its dues.

Nice article, will be interested to see if the local sales reports are true. I read on ITWeb only 5000 units were brought in?

However, Budget Technologies owner Shannon Rogotzki, whose company is one of the PS3 resellers, says only 5 000 units have been brought into the country. This was confirmed by another source, who attended the media launch earlier in the week.

Personally I never thought that the PS3 wouldn't sell well. People are very brand loyal, more so for the PlayStation. People who bought PlayStations before will more than likely buy again.

What peefs me off is the miscommunication and misinformation given to the public who don't know better. I was at the BT Games at the East Rand Mall yesterday pre-ordering C&C3, when a couple were asking about the PS3. They asked one of the staff if the PS3 has better graphics than the 360. The staff person said "Yes, much better." I only stopped laughing when they started looking at me funny. :)

Let's look at this a bit differently. I was an AMD fanboy since I bought my first PC. Nothing could sway me from them. Many times I would point and laugh at my Intel counterparts. What happened next? Core 2 Duo, that's what. C2D come out and wrecked havoc among AMD and I switched.... but why?

Everywhere I wentand everthing I read said C2D was better, proved it was better. I made an informed decision to go with C2D with the info at hand. Not some salesperson trying to make a buck.

Didn't detect fanboy undercurrent, although it come across somewhat hopefully optimistic :D

Seriously though, I expected no less of the launch sales figures. Consumers have known since November about the March launch in PAL territories so it stands to reason that fans would rather save their cash and wait until launch to buy their console of choice. I'd do the same for a product I really wanted as it's counter productive to spend the cash on something else (unless cash isn't an issue :p ) and not have enough when the time comes.

The question now is whether the level of PS3 sales can maintain the current momentum? Obviously consumers still busy saving for the whopping R6300 for console plus extra R1000 or more for games / extra controller etc. will still add to the sales figures as and when they save enough or clear enough line of credit for the purchase. But once the '2nd' rush is over, what will the ongoing sales figures for the more expensive PS3 look like compared to the cheaper XBox 360 and even more affordable Wii?

To further compicate matters, there's also that small portion of gamers that actually plan on buying both consoles (or even all three) so who really ends up the winner or the loser in the longrun?

Consoles and game sales are in it for the longhaul. Short term bursts of sales doesn't prove any console a success over another. The jury is out on this debate :cool:

I think you're missing the point. If anyone else made a complaint, nobody would probably say anything about it. But the funny thing is, it was done by a group of 360 fanboys. And what I still don't get, is why bother?

And please don't tell me they care about bad consumer practise, lol. Just like all the 360 owners wants to "warn" potential PS3 buyers...

CNA was misleading the public by giving them false information.... but that's ok with you? WTF do you mean by "Why bother"? Why did people bother taking Telkom to task about some of their adverts?

Are you just pissed off because it was the "360 fanboys", who by the way aren't in the wrong here, who challenged CNA about it.

Please explain to me how lying about products to people doesn't bother you.

And who are you to judge?

If you don't give a rats a$$ about it don't let ethics bother you.

Console fanboys are probably the only people who would have sufficient information to see the false claim and be able to refute it, by the words of the councillor themselves. Can you refute a claim by a soap manufacturer if you don't know soap? So stop sulking and accept it. The ASA, the legal consumer watchdog found the Ad a misrepresentation, not the 360 fanboys, not you.

And as far as your "who ****ing cares goes", maybe if you actually read the explanations that have been posted a dozen times on the site alone you'd get it.

And answer the question - do you have a PS3 yet?
