PS3 Marketing Deemed False

please help me out by writing some PS3 good news stories...

I am not joking when I tell you they are very hard to find... launch lines where non existant, sales figures have not come in yet but it looks like a slow start.

No decent games getting released anytime soon... Please help me out here!!!

a lot of complaints filed with the ASA are by competitors.... M$ should have done it....maybe however, they also felt that it would be petty for them to do it and paid those guys to lodge on their behalf?!!?!?!?
Maybe M$ just didnt notice it?

So when you going to add Xbox fanboy to the header of your blog? ;) :p

lol

I think you're missing the point. If some guy from the public complained about the false advertising, then it's fine. But for a couple of guys from a 360 website to make a complaint... somehow I doubt that they are concerned about the advertising facts. What I'm saying is why do they care???

It's just funny that they got a group of (4) people together and decided... let's go complain. The PS3 might just become a huge success because of this and then we're all doomed with our 360's...

I don't think any level headed gamer thinks any of the platforms are doomed in this generation.

They all have strong line ups to come I just don't see any 1 console running away with it. All the better for us, but some fans are fiercely loyal and they will call the opposition on any and all dirty tactics.

CNA OR SK Games OR Sony organised the false advertising and it is a good thing that they where taken to task for it. That is my humble opinion.

rather consumers do it than MS themselves. If MS did it, it would look really bad on them.

Good move my the ASA though JK8 might refute these claims I'm sure...somehow.

I do!:)
Granted that the gamers felt obliged to take up that falsed advertising, thats all it is "false" advertising.

Are you even aware of how much false advertising there is?
In the cell industry for one, theres millions!!! Every Samsung ad has some questionable lines Nokio to, and then the motor industry, some of those claimed times can be funny...

It happens everyday, seems MS fans are just bored and somehow wanted to prove a point lol!

So have the PS3 Fanboys sunk so low to need false advertising ;)

I think it's goos that these guys are being kept inline, I haven't seen any misleading Xbox 360 advertising. I haven'[t seen much advertising though....

It's a small story but it deserves it's 5 minutes of fame as well :D
I'm not very comfortable with the complaint or the way SK and CNA dealt with it. We know the Cell processor is faster, but the advertisers didn't take enough care to find unbiased proof which showed exactly how much faster. And they just capitulated before doing their own study.

Also, those claims came out before the PS3 was even launched, so things have changed now.

So the spirit of the ads was fine, but they got carried away.

I think these XBox owners are feeling inadequate, and will find anything wrong with the PS3 to feel better about their purchases.;)

Well, lets see, let me put in in a way the PS3 fanboys will actually understand the significance of this.

ASA pwn3d uz P$3 sux0r!

;)

So true

Why wont they just shut up:D you never see PS3 owners complaining, they dont have the time to. They would rather enjoy there wonderful consols while 360 fanboys Read up articles that bring down the PS3 just to validate there purchase.

he he he

the benefit of having 2-3 hotly contested gaming consoles means at least the developers of these consoles will always try to outperform the other one which is a great environment for the consumer... cuz competition is a good thing.

too bad ps3 failed on this one :D

Good to see them complain but really just pathetic.
Sony has lied about the Playstation since Playstation1 (PSX).
Remember in 1996 (locally) it said PSX was as powerful as 5 pentiums? That was hog wash as much as this is.
Then they said PS2 was hundreds of times more powerful than PSX, implying that the PS2 was a least more powerful than 500 Pentiums. Yet even more hog wash...

How is this different today?
Really, off with your 360 fans, If the PS3 suceeds it'll do it on its own merits and if it fails it will certainly not be by your meaningless harping about rubbish.

Go play PGR or something.

Here's something:

PS3 doubles folding@home Processing power

By Eugene Huang

It's only been a little more than two days since the software was introduced, but the PS3's entry into Folding@Home has already moved Stanford's distributed computing project forward by leaps and bounds. As of approximately 4:00 PM EST, the latest statistics on the project have shown that PS3 users are contributing 367 Tera (trillion) FLoating point Operations Per Second (TFLOPS), which is currently more than twice the amount of all of the other operating systems participating in the project combined. And that number is growing rapidly, as Kotaku originally reported that PS3 users had contributed only 251 TFLOPS as of 8:00 AM EST this morning.

A FLOPS is a unit that measures the number of calculations a computer can execute at one time, which is thereby a means of judging a computer's performance. According to the statistics page, there are currently 159198 Windows PCs that are actively participating in the project, and those combined processors have reached a total of 151 TFLOPS. By comparison, the number of active PS3 machines totals only 14971, but the combined power of PS3 consoles is already contributing more than half of the 616 total TFLOPS that are currently being devoted to the project. Both Stanford and Sony are expecting the PS3 to push the project into the PFLOPS scale, with one PFLOPS equaling that of 1000 TFLOPS, or 1 quadrillion FLOPS.

The PS3's success in the program has also sparked a recent string of activism, with gaming blog PS3 Fanboy organizing a "fold-a-thon", requesting that all PS3 users leave their units on overnight with the Folding@Home program running this coming Sunday."

I do!:)

Yes I think that is exactly the point,

I'm not very comfortable with the complaint or the way SK and CNA dealt with it. We know the Cell processor is faster

Nothing in regard to processing speed has really been proven yet so I am not sure the cell processor is faster. Theoretically faster maybe but no facts yet

Also, those claims came out before the PS3 was even launched, so things have changed now.

Umm you do realise their are a few other countries outside of SA who had the PS3 last year November?

I think these XBox owners are feeling inadequate, and will find anything wrong with the PS3 to feel better about their purchases.;)

I don't understand how you can admit that Sony lied but then call it meaningless when consumers call them on it? Lying is bad remember?

It's all relative ...

This argument is really one of symantics. Reading through the full ASA Ruling clearly states the following:

1. The ASA are not technical experts
2. The ASA rely on unbiased, independent verification of claims
3. The ASA found no 'direct' evidence (simply put: straight quotations) to support the claims
4. On pure technicality found the advertising rulings to have been breached and thus found in favour of the complainants.

I think MS clearly wanted to avoid raising this matter themselves for obvious and logical reasons. I agree that any consumer should dispute advertised claims if they feel they're false - doesn't matter whether it's 'XBox 360 fanboys' trying to justify their purchases, disgruntled 'PS3 fanboys' that can't afford R6300, or simply a concerned consumer on the street. The merits of claims that are reported should be investigated and treated fairly.

Before anyone starts labelling me, let me state that I've weighed the pros and cons of both the PS3 and XBox 360 and went for the latter. I'm not a console player traditionally and still prefer a PC for FPS games but I am a fanboy for games not platform.

That should shed some light on my following comment: Reading through the technical specs from IBM, it does state that the CELL BE has 8 times more SIMD capability than traditional processors - purely because of the CELL's parallel architecture. Does this mean it's 8 times faster? Not necessarily, but it does mean accurate performance benchmarks should be run before making such blatant claims as advertised by SK Games / CNA. Had such tests been done, it could very well have proved the cell is indeed 8 times faster than standard single-core CPUs - but the advertising should then clearly state that and not generalise 'most computers'.

On the otherhand, it is indicative of the short-sighted mentally which could produce statements like "There's no proof that Telkom ADSL is expensive" as clearly it boils down to a lack of understanding the facts presented and laziness to dig deeper to determine the truth.

This ruling is a victory for consumerism - not for XBox 360 vs PS3. United we stand, divided we fall and then continue to bicker among ourselves while we're being forced to pay more than we really should. Always try to look at the bigger picture. Not everything in life is a competition. If you're happy to spend R6300 on a PS3 with all the trimmings built-in then good for you. If not, spend less on what you need and add the rest later if need be. The true potential for all 3 current generation consoles is still to be exploited and all consumers stand to gain. Diversity afterall is a good thing :) Without competition, Sony would most likely not have been forced to reduce costs for the PS3 and take a $300 knock on the manufacturing costs - they'd simply sell it at full cost as there'd be no alternative in the market for consumers to purchase.

great post!

yeah great post. ;)

I just think 360 supporters are being a bit ridiculous. If they have such qualms about the claimed power figures, then why was this not raised years earlier and does it matter?

Nobody buys potential power to the end user that could read 10,000x more powerful than most computers that doesn't mean a thing if the games look and play like PS1.

Also I doubt if MS cares about Sony's claims. They are here to sell consoles not to fight Sony on power figures which aren't off the mark at all (for the CPU not RSX). If you recall most competitions where MS is involved, they sell their product not their products superiority over the competition.

They are here to sell consoles not to fight Sony on power figures which aren't off the mark at all (for the CPU not RSX).
that assumption is debatable. the individual cores are not deemed to be equal to a normal pc cpu.

just for reference, i dont own an xbox. i'm getting the wii

These chaps are a bunch of clueless a$$holes ... don't they have anything better to do with their time ???.

It is about the games morons.

The fact is that the Cell is very powerfull than most CPU's only if you utilize it properly ... just check out the rather amazing stats from the Folding@Home project and how the PS3 clobbers everything else in TFLOPS.

1 Gigaflop per PC
3 Gigaflops per Intel Mac
30 Gigaflops of Folding Power per PS3

Geez, why don't we blame world hunger on fanboyz while we're at it.

What's the difference between PS3 false advertising and Telkom false advertising?

Was the marketing for the PS3 false? Yes. Therefore it needs to be removed. End of story.

The fact is that the Cell is very powerfull than most CPU's only if you utilize it properly ...

Define using it properly...
