PS3 modchip/jailbreak here

But, can you copy the games ? I remember with the PS2 games, at first you couldn't just copy the disc cos it didn't work.

This is legit. I would wait before buying though as others are gonna copy it and the prices will drop significantly.

Could you please quote the article, that site is blocked here.

PSJailbreak Detectable and Bannable on PSN
PS3 Hacks, PSN, 22.08.2010
While we are all up and excited about PSJailbreak (PSjb), there might be a risk on playing with PSjb on PSN. According to SKFUand RichDevX, the Backup manager game ID (LAUN-12345) could be logged/recorded by Sony when logged into PSN (when online). This would obviously allow Sony to see who would be using the illegal PSjb/clone and we could very well see ban waves similar to the Xbox 360. Sony does currently ban PSN/consoles that results in the 8002A227 error code.

As people start getting their PSjb in the next few week, we highly advise that you do not log into PSN while using the backup manager, which means no playing online.

Stay tuned for the latest development on PS Jailbreak.

For now just don't play online.

Lol... that article deserves a big "Well DuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuH" meme.

I'd make sure that little dongle wasn't even in the same room when I connected to PSN :D

Well i couldn't wait and did the payment lastnight :D, stock is arriving end of August so i should receive it first week of September (this year lol). I got mine from Modchipcentral

Total cost was around $145.90 ($129.95 USB , $15.95 shipping)

Will post my findings here :)

oh please do post back here once you have tested it ... look forward to reading your review of it... there's some talk of quality loss when using the usb to load games but i'm not too sure how true that is... would love to get this but way to pricey right now... if they ever find a way to load it to a normal usb flash then i'll be the first to buy\download the software :D

No problem, i will give as much details as i can unless someone else beats me to it hehe.

Also i plan on using this with one HDD strictly for PS JB and one for legitimate games, i reckon all should be fine, however testing will have to be done :)

Word is the chinese knockoffs are going to work almost the same if not exactly the same as the original one so its hopefully going to be cheap.

I do hope our local modchip resellers grab this as it makes getting stock much faster i would think :/

PSJailBreak is short lived snatch-and-grab scam

PSJailBreak is short lived snatch-and-grab scamAugust 23, 2010by Mike Ferro

News of a potential hack for the PS3 spread like wild fire across the Web recently. Besides the fact the PS3 have remained unhackable for nearly four years, there is nothing else special about the situation.

There are other consoles out on the market that have already been hacked for quite some time. The Wii and Xbox 360 have been hacked within a few months after launch. However, retailers selling the PS3 mod seem to be desperate to offload as many units as possible at ridiculously high prices of $170 AUS. Other illegal mods on the black market go for much less starting at $20.

Several sites have done some analysis on the USB mod for the PS3 and they all conclude that it should be a relatively inexpensive mod and doesn’t warrant the unusual price.

As I mentioned in my previous post, if the hack is based on tricking the PS3 into thinking its a dev unit then its a design flaw rather then a true hack. A true hack usually requires circumventing the security measures (in this case unlock all of the encryption layers) and creating a custom firmware. This was what George Hotz was working on before he gave up.

A way to downgrade and a custom firmware would be the key to entering a true perpetual cycle of a cat-and-mouse game between hackers and Sony.

However, what we have here is not that but a temporary workaround or "trick," in which the window for use may permanently close soon.

Digital Foundry in an analysis recently stated:

Bearing in mind that PSJailbreak is retailing for upwards of $130, there’s a very strong possibility that this may well be the most expensive and short-lived hack ever made, and factoring in the simplicity of the hardware, the very high price seems almost reminiscent of a smash-and-grab raid on users intent on piracy no matter what the cost. The makers of PSJailbreak are charging so high a price because the window of opportunity in terms of exclusivity and the longevity of the hack itself is potentially very small.

Another site, Nyleveia did a rather thorough analysis of the USB device by taking it apart and has gone as far as to identify all of the components in order to see if the device could be cloned. However, they also conclude that it may not be worth the effort as the tech is definitely easily detectable by Sony.

Nyleveia writes:

this provides a reasonable explanation for the ridiculously high price of the USB device: the creators are in effect taking snatch-and-grab approach before the device gets blocked and rendered useless.

It appears that the PS3 hack could be a snatch-and-grab situation, scamming gamers out of $170 AUS. Judging from the analysis, It seems like if you ordered the device it could be rendered useless by the time you receive it from overseas.

unless they find a way to keep the firmware updatable this could be a real problem ...

Anyone know where we can get one of the supported microcontrollers to run PSGroove on?

"This is the PSGroove, an open-source reimplementation of the psjailbreak exploit for
AT90USB and related microcontrollers.

It should work on:

- AT90USB162
- AT90USB646
- AT90USB647
- AT90USB1286
- AT90USB1287
- ATMEGA32U4"

Hi guys,

I dont know if this is the place to be asking this,

But is a Playstation 3 from Dubai compatible in South Africa?

Yes.

PS3 games are region free. DVD, Blu-ray playback as well as PS1 & PS2 backward compatibility are not region free. SA & Dubai however fall in the same region so there is no problem.

Secondly the power supply in Dubai is 220V/50Hz while SA is 230V/50Hz and the PS3 PSU unit works from 110V-240V if I'm not mistaken. The plugs on the lead might also be identical to the SA ones unless they are using the G plug (Their type C&D plugs will work here fine).
